l bought my cob in October and out in his paddock he can be a bit excitable and when he is being led from the main field even with company he can be ''bargy'' if thats the right term...i dont wanna hack him out on his own incase he decides to try and bolt back to the yard where l keep him cos thats where his friends are.Would it be a good idea to try some calming supplements, l havent ridden him much because the roads have been slippery round our parts so im worried he might try something? my cob is 13 years old

My first suggestion would be get a trainer and work on ground work now before he pummels you.
But if you refuse that.. then buy a video on ground work and hope for the best.
Unless this horse has training.. nothing will work, not even calming supplements. Supplements are not to be used as an excuse for lack of training.

l had the same problem with my cob in the end l just had to hack her out. l had to walk her outside the gate close the gate then get on otherwise she would pull me inside to the yard! l warmed her up in the school before we left & made sure l had my crop, l took her through a field & had a gallop she was great then we got to the top of the rode & tried to turn right she was not having none of it! l had my reins so short because she kept rearing & trying to bult home back down the field l kept her on a really tight circle & gave her a smack. the first time l jumped off her & walked her back DONT DO THIS IT TALES TWICE AS LONG TO TRAIN THEM AGAIN my cob was also scared of pigs! she reared when she saw them & would try bolting back down the rode! l just had to keep my leg on & trot her past them but wear a body vest & hat because u r more than likely to come off the first time! :-) KEEP YOUR LEG ONNN hope this helps.

l am a horse trainer & l have dealt with quite a few bargy horses. The first thing any horse has to learn about is our personal space & never to invade it. Secondly they have to be taught to be led properly, away from other horses, in & out if fields & in & out of stables. Thirdly they need to know basic ground manners which obviously ur cob was never taught. You really need to find a trainer near u & get ur horse sorted before he causes any injuries or damage. If u r near me l will be more than happy to come & see him. l am in Norfolk in the UK. E-mail me if l can help bfoldbucklive.co.uk

l got 2 thumbs down so l am deleting my answer. WTF people, they need to learn, all the horses at our yard soon learn that the word NO. Means NO! And they do not do it again! So dear the answer below. It is fine getting the horse to respect ur space, but that the way we do it. You can not just tell it to respect space, it needs to learn that ur the boss!
Sorry if any of that has offeneded anyone but l am not having a good day, after being throw into a hedge by a TB who is newly broken.

This is classic horse behaviour, he is just being a horse (he is not bad mannered or just being a usual strong cob )so do not blame him for it. Getting a trainer in wo not help as ur horse is not doing anything wrong what u need to learn is how to communicate with ur horse in a way to prevent this behaviour yourself. If u get a trainer in the problem will be solved on a temporary basis but if u do not know how to communicate with ur horse, he wo not respect ur space & will revert back to his old ways. u need to start from the very begining & build up ur relationship with ur horse on the ground do not go anywhere near the saddle until u get rid of those emotions & have a better relationship with ur horse. l hope this helps.and if u want to know how to go about it I'd be happy to help victoriaisabellthompson.co.uk
P.S. do not go down the line of the girl who posted above me!!!!! ''tell him no''??? that would be like going to france asking for a beautiful pair of heels but getting a pair of rigger boots in the face because THEY DON'T SPEAK OUR LANGUAGE AND DON'T UNDERSTAND!!!!! no matter how aggressive u get & how loud u say it! yes u need to be firm but in the right situation & that really is not it! Trust me there ARE better ways! P.P.S. l wonder why u were thrown into a hedge by a newly ''broken'' tb perhaps ur methods do not work.

My cob was exactly like yours when l got him ( in october) so l did a parelli course with lynn henry, a student of parelli. Know he is great. http://lynnhenry.co.uk/ thats her website. l live in england near where she is. l worked through her books with her & got my cob to listen & bond with me. Parelli is a very good way of getting ur horse to stay out of ur space (not barge into you) & have good behavior. Lynn henry actually doesnt do it exactly the way that parelli does she is altered it slightly & wrighten books about it . Look at her website & see what u think. even if u dont live near her u can buy her books ''think like a pony'' & work through them with u parients or friends & its amazing. My horse (as ive already said) was like yours, but now he trotts to me when he see is me coming to get him & he wont barge into me. Also ive noiticed that when he is scared he avoids running into me to get away. l feel totally safe around him.

it sounds as though he is taking the biscuit. IF u have not got a good instructor who will give u some good advice then. When leading in from the field walk beside him & if he starts to pull give a few strong sharp tugs on the lead rope. after a while he will realise that when he pulls it will hurt & so therefore stop pulling. If this doesnt work try leading him in with a bridle on (i do this with a lot of my hunters that r out of work atm due to the ice). As for hacking then either ride him with friends or put a very confident rider on him (ie ur instructor) & let them hack him out a bit for you. l have just bought a little cobby mare (15hh) & the people l bought her from where total novices & she would take the pee. She would run u over when opening the stable door. take hold out riding.. kick.. buck. rear & drag u along the yard. I'v now had her for 5 months & got her going rather well & she does now behave herself. All u have to do is stay patient & try not to loose ur tempet & the more u pull the horse the more he will pull you.

No a calming supplement would be a waste of money. Your problem is that the horse has never been shown how he should behave - his last owner would let him barge so he has no idea it is not what you want. Get some help retraining him, but remember he is NOT being 'bad', he just does not know any different. If you're in Somerset l will help if you like, get in touch if you want

you do not say how old your cob is.is he only young and not long backed. has he a bit of age to him and been allowed to get away with what ever he wants. if you got him in october and have not done alot with him he will have loads of energy to burn off.what experience do you have.you may need to get some help with him.he sounds like he needs loads of schooling.

Hi, I,ve had a few experiences with bargy horses, u should certainly do a lot of ground work with him, as a rule horses generaly ride as they behave on the ground, set a side training sessions every day where u lead him in & out of the yard, wherever u feel like taking him. You must insist on good manners, consistantly! the minute he tries to barge you, stand him & back him up a few steps, when he is settled, walk on, using ur voice tell him to walk on! if he starts to barge again repeat the process, again & again if necessary, u must have patience, & do not get angry with him, u r training him every time u lead him so make sure u r consistant, use the same words & tone of voice for u commands, & give him plenty of praise when he is listening, but be aware he may think that means he can barge off with u again, just keep repeating. It really is worth it, if l were u l would look for some books to do with breaking & training & take him through it, u have nothing to lose & everything to gain, (if u have the time) if not try to make the time, he sounds like he is got into the habit of being pushy & u need to remind him of some manners, also when u turn him out do not just let him rush off, turn his head to u before u take his halter off then gently let him go, with no rush, always insist on good manners to stop him slipping back to his old ways, he will soon be a much nicer horse to handle, good luck! & hope i've helped.

a lot of people have the wrong idea about cobs that they are all very quiet but it is not always the case l would advice you to get some help from an instructor and if you have friends with horses they may also beable to help out. you need to bond with this horse then you will gain his trust and feel more confident.

You need to make sure that u r in control of him when leading on the ground. You could try a Dually Halter, designed by Monty Roberts they r really good for teaching a horse to walk by u as they reward the horse when he is next to u but apply pressure when he moves away, hence training him to walk close to you. You can also get DVDs to show u how to use them.
You may want to look at what u r feeding him if he is excitable, u say u have not rode him much, he may have lots of energy to burn. How often was he rode before? Also have u amended his feed to go inline with his workload. For example if u r feeding him the same amount but not exercising him he may be pretty much high as a kite! Being a native they r termed good doers meaning they do well on little hard feed. With little exercise he will be burning off only a small amount to keep warm etc & as long as he has ad lib hay then he will need minimum hard feed & non heating so something like sugar beet pulp/ chaff etc no oats! . Supplements can be calming but to be honest it is a pesonal choice & it sounds like ur cob is just full of beans & needs exercise & manners! You would probably be wasting ur money on supplements.
Is there anywhere u can exercise him at the yard? Or if u cant ride him could u lunge him in a spare field that isnt too muddy/ churned. Or long reining. Also if there r other horses at the yard ask if u can ride out with them at the weekend, this way u will have company & u wont be worried about ur horse bolting back to the yard. If u r worried about him being overly excited out, lunge him first then ask if someone can walk out with you, if no one can ride out & just walk & trot keeping him calm & not getting him excited. Cobs can often be more difficult as they r so intelligent, if u ask a farrier they will say cobs r often the worse! They r lovely to ride just they r often trying to get the better of a situation!!! Good luck hopefully the weather will be better soon & then u will be able to get plenty of riding in & get confidence with ur new horse.
