i´ve managed to find myself a 1year old colt who is approx the height 142cm which would be 14hands to date. l asked the owner for heights of the two parents and all he could tell me was that he believe the potro to reach the height of 16.2. l understand the horses mature age of growth both in appearance and in bone fusion but l would like to ask if any one has a very approx estimate of the growth in second and third year. with this height at first year, is there a chance of hitting 16hands. l know this question can also vary with breed but thought l would ask for a second opinion. Awaiting reply. =)

my aunts horse is like this too he will probably reach at least 16 -17 hands high. they grow most in the first year or two but he will grow a lot just more slowly in the next 3 years good luck with him:)

l think he should reach the height of 15.3hands at end of growth

This is the formula my vet gave me. Using a tape measure, measure from the middle of the knee to the top of the coronary band. Translate the inches into hands: 14''= 14h, 14 1/4''= 14.1h, 14 1/2''= 14.2h,
14 3/4''= 14.3h, 15''=15h, etc.. If adequate nutritional and exercise needs are met this is fairly accurate in assessing the finished size of the horse, once the horse has reached 7 months of age.

he will prob not grow a massive amount more. he will maybe make 15.2 at most.

you best bet is to double his leg height now and that will give you a good indication of his final height

Apparently a horse grows to about 90% of it is final height in the first year. If that is the case with your horse he should make about 15.3hh. As you said though, there is lots of variables and there are plenty of small yearlings who have a sudden growth spurt later on than usual.
l knew one horse that grew another inch at four years old!
