Make sure you can fit at least three fingers under the pommel and that the seat is not too high off the horse is back, but not to close-fitting either.

There really isnt an ''averege'' girth siza, but usually you would use something around a 32 or a 36, but it all depends on your horse.

Fitting a saddle to a horse like Kicking Bear said should be done without a saddle pad. You should have at least 2 fingers clearance through the gullet (Underneath front part of saddle.) and should not rock or move about freely.

As for girth size. If you own a TB type horse a 48'' girth works nicely.

Are you talking about dressage or jumping saddles? You will need a longer girth for a jumping saddle.
