so l have a normal tree saddle right now. It is putting pressure by the withers, and l need a new saddle... so do l need a saddle with a diffrent gullet (if so what kind) or a saddle with a wider tree?

if your saddle is putting pressure on the top of your horse is withers, you need a different gullet. if it is putting pressure on the sides, then you need a wider tree. go to a place that sells saddles and have them measure both you AND your horse. that way the saddle will be comfortable for both of you! have fun riding!

Yes you need a wider or WIDE Treed saddle for your horse. Best bet is to sell your old saddle and buy a new one that fits before you sore up your horse.

What kind of horse do u have? English? Western? l will talk western. If u r noticing soreness in the withers, l would go with a wider tree..but depending on how the horse is built, ie: quarter horse, u need either semi-quarter horse or full quarter horse bars. An Arab will take an Arab saddle. A grade/mixed breed will usually take semi quarter horse bars. You can always pad up more if a saddle is too wide. If u have a good tack store around, they may let u take the horse there & try on saddles. Be sure u have room as to not rub the withers. Lots of saddle/horse combos out there.
Quarter Horse Bar or Semi Quarter Horse Bar is by far the most common tree. It has a higher pitch as opposed to the flatter pitch for FQHB. It is for the medium back, decent wither & often mixed blood descent (1/2 Arab, Appendix or other mixes). Most of our saddles r semi qh/qh bars. QH/Semi QH bars usually have the higher pitched angles.
The FQHB tree (usually 7'' gullet) is often used for the ''Bulldog'' Quarter Horse or horses with broad backs & sometimes mutton-withered Quarter Horses. The FQHB will usually have a flatter pitch than the QH/Semi QH bar.
Arab saddles r for Arabians they have a narrow (usually 6 1/2'' - 6 3/4'' width) gullet like the Semi QH but a flatter pitch angle like the FQHB - sometimes flatter yet, than the FQHB.
The bars need to distribute the proper weight, so fitting the saddle also depends on the riders weight.

I'd get a saddle fitter to come and see horse. They usually bring lots of saddles when they visit and can make sure that new saddle will fit both the horse and rider.

You need a wider tree. l have a Prix de Nation medium wide tree close contact no leg rolls, that fit a Morgan/Percheron cross (started to get a little tight when she hit around 6). It would probably fit your horse. If you are interested e-mail me.

It seems to me that if it is putting pressure on the withers, then the saddle you have is too wide and it is slipping down. Your best bet to getting a saddle that fits is to work with a saddle fitter in your area.

Yes, a wide tree saddle. If the saddle is too narrow it can rub and injure your horses withers and if it is too wide it can overlap his withers and cause major rubbing/injury.
