Spirit is based on a Kiger mustang.

The movie is not specifically about any particular kind of mustang, but just represents any of the thousands of wild horses (mustangs) that roamed the American West so many years ago.

American Mustang, Kiger type ( l think.) And the 'paint' horses r Mustangs, too. The Paint breed is almost synonymous with a Quarter Horse, while the ones in the movie r just that color type.
Mustangs r not true wild horses, they're only feral (descendants of once tame horses.) The only true wild horses in the world r Preswalski is (not sure if the spelling is right) , in Mongolia.

Spirit is a buckskin Kiger Mustang. l think the pinto mare named Rain is a American Paint but Im not sure cause it never says what breed she is. Spirits mom is l guess a Kiger even though Kiger is dont come in palomino coloring in real life. l know his fathers name was Strider even though it doesnt show him in the movie and l think his father was black or bay.
