l have a welsh pony, he is about 8 years old. he is kinda fat and when l ride him, l try burning off that fat, but l dont wanna run him because im afraid ill push him to hard. How do l exercise him right without pushing him to hard? he steals the other horses food and l cant control that.... and the food we give our horses is cake? if that helps any

Exercise more regularly, even if it is just gentle, and feed less! If that does not work, consult a vet.

What l found is a great exercise is not really hard work running around or anything, but helps them loose wait. What l did with my horse was to make her go in a really steady slow elevated trot (she is usually a maniac so this was hard for her!) & it really made her concentrate & work hard to engage herself & lift her steps. Even when l had only done about 10 minutes trotting slowly, she would come out in a white sweat, & she lost a lot of weight! Of course this probably would not work if ur horse is good at engaging & going on the bit already, & it does not work for more than 2 months because by then hey have learnt what to do!
Good luck!

l would suggest exercist them alot. And cut back their feed a bit. Like work it up. Give a little less each day. But they still should have enough to keep them healthy. Maybe do not feed oats or at least maybe only once a week or so.

Use this little acronym. It is used for humans but can also be applied to horses. F.I.T.T.
Frequency - how often Intensity - how hard Type - type of exercise Time - how long
When working with a horse that is out of shape, u want to start with a low INTENSITY workout for a small amount of TIME. Then change the TYPE after a while after increasing the INTENSITY.
You can google the FITT formula & learn more about it.
Good luck (:

There is No such thing as overworking a horse!!!!!!!! This animal has soooo much endurance! ride him hard for two hours!! Or more!! l ride my horses for hores for hours and at the end they are a sweaty mess!! Also lunge him/her for a hour!! WORK him hard!!! Hope it helps!

keep him in a seperate stall whilst you feed the other horses
long long rides every day, mainly walk, bit of trot, bit of canter
jumping is good for fitness, when you jump really go for it, get him sweaty as you can, just dont do this too often and make sure you clean im down and get a sweat rug on afterwards!
lunging is always good
tbh it is mainly all about a little bit, often

Try really hard to find a way to separate ur pony from the other horses while he eats.
In addition- DONT RUN HIM!!!!!! if he is overweight running him into the ground is going to cause mental stress so he wont want to work anymore, but it will also put extra stress on his ligaments.
Try what is called ''Interval Training'' This means that u start by walking for 10 minutes(or however long it takes for him to get sweaty) & do a couple rides like this then next walk for 15 minutes & trot for 2 minutes then walk for 15, next walk him for 15 minutes then trot him for 5 minutes then walk him for 15 minutes. continue building these intervals until ur r at about 15-20 mins of walk & 15 minutes of trot without him getting sweaty. Then add in ur canter- start with 2 minute sets with 7 minute walks in between.
This is the BEST way to build up ur horse because it will give him a good mental basis so he will continue to want to work, will give u the best chance of getting him fit without having an injury because u will be slowly building the muscle & bones & tendons up at the right amount for the work. USE THE INTERVAL TRAINING!!!!!!!!!!! Hope this helps & u TRY IT!
