Do you think this is okay to do on a daily basis

l have a thoroughbred that l lease. l apply hoof conditioner everyday once a day.
Before the conditioner l clean the outside of his hoods with the brush part of the hoofpick. The hoofpick looks like this http://doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=X1-1070&ids=894063247
Would it be okay to fill a bucket with water, dip the hoof pick in it, then use the wet brush to clean the outer hooves everyday?
l know it sounds stupid but l was just wondering if you think this could damage his hoof.
By the way, l use ''Sound Hoof Conditioner''
Do you think this is okay.
Yes, I am aware this is a stupid question but l just wanted to make sure ;]
l live in Southern California where it is dry and warm all year, he is stalled, with turnouts not in the mud.
Here are the ingredients..
Essential fatty acids, retinol (palmitic acid, a form of Vitamin A),
triglycerides, natural antioxidants, gamma-linoleic acid, and natural
Omega-6 and Omega-9 vitamins.
Natural vanilla scent.
l do not apply it to the frogs or anything.. just to the outside.
Just to be clear, I am using Sound but today was the first day of my lease. So I've only used it once and PLAN on using it everyday.
But l think I've decided to clean his hoof walls with a little water everyday, and once or twice a week I will use sound.

l dont see how it could- horse is hooves are tougher than that!

No it wo not hurt to brush with the water. As long as the hoff conditioner in non-drying (does not dry the hoof---some do) all will be fine. Brushing with water is no different than a horse standing in the rain or a puddle of water. He will be fine. :-)

It does not sound like it is going to do harm, especially if u r in an arid climate. If u r in a damp climate, u might be adding more moisture than u need. But if u have been doing this for a while, & not noticed any bad effect, you're probably fine. You really should check with the farrier, as he or she will know ur horse, the conditions & what treatments will do the most good, the most harm, & just make u happy without effecting the horse.

l am glad you're so concerned about ur horse, keep up the diligence!

You should not wet his feet at all. You should not use conditioners on his feet as they are harmful. Using a hoof pick gently is great. A horse is feet can never be to hard or too dry. Never apply unnatural chemicals to a horse is feet. Regardless of the labels, no one benefits from the use of conditioners except the company selling them. Again, they are harmful and not recommended. If there is a problem with the quality of the hoof, it is not a lack of ''conditioner''.

Yeah, just be sure you're not applying the conditioner too often.

This should not be a problem. However, be mindful of Thrush. Thrush is a bacterium that thrives in moisture, and will eat at your horse is frog if you do not properly remove the excess moisture.

you can actually save yourself the money. good hooves come from the inside. if the horse needs better hooves (they crack/chip/lose shoes), you might want to consider a supplement with biotin in it.

topical moisturizes do not usually do anything.

l thin it shoud be o. but since calfornia is dry ou might want to watch & feel how he walks because u dont want his feet to get soft.

i had a problem similar to this because l live in southern texas & we had a tank & my horses liked to stay near the tank so it was always moist on there feet. & when l would ride them in arena is with very little amounts of rocks they would be real sensative to there feet. causing problems with their performance.

so u might want to watch how wet u make his hoofs..
hope this helps you!!
best of luck!

that Fine,
water actually hydrates their hooves and as long and the conditioner does not dry out there hooves or the horse is allergic to it or anything it is absolutely Fine.

and before you put on the conditioner wait for the hoof to dry a little because the water would just repel the conditioner and it wold just spread around other then soaking in properly.

Have fun with him/her, Bye

yes because l recently went on a website to pick around and make sure l was doing it all right. l clicked on hoof care and it says you should be conditionered/mosturized to ensure that they stay moist strong and flex.

so, according to the website its the best thing TO do

Listen to barefoot...there is ample research on this and she keeps up on all of it.

This is what l was told by a farrier a long time ago.
A horses hoof needs to breath. Apply the hoof conditioner to the cornet band area/top part of the hoof only. You can not change the part of the hoof that has already grown out so just work on the new hoof growth coming in.

Disregard what the last person said on the benefits of Biotin. l once believed in Biotin to be a great supplement in benefiting the overall condition of the hoof, improving the hoof wall, blah blah. Turns out that Biotin only increases growth of the hoof, not the quality. This in turn causes more visits from the farrier & more likely soundness issues, including wall cracks, sensitive soles, etc.
l recently turned to a barefoot specialist to aid my 23 year old barefoot Thoroughbred with cracks & a poor ability to land heel first - as well as sensitivity. After one trim, the cracks r now gone as he made a 45 degree angle on the hoof wall to not touch the floor. Only for the soles, heels, & frog to do their job. He is not afraid to walk on gravel anymore, he is developing calluses on his heels & soles, the color of his hooves even improved with proper circulation. The hoof wall was not meant to bare weight & that is the main reason cracks develop. So putting creams/conditioner on the hoof that is damaged probably would not help if the farrier is not doing a good job. Thrush is not very common on ur side of the country since it is nice & dry, but keep in mind that too much moisture can provide a nice place for bacteria. So long story short, u probably would not have to use it every day. But it depends on the advice of ur farrier & the needs of the individual horse.

You can actually cause considerable damage to the hoof wall if u use hoof oils or hoof conditioners too frequently. Too much oil in the hoof wall can make it soft, & if it becomes too soft it is weakened & then the horse can have difficulty holding a shoe. The same problem can happen if the hoof is too dry. But if it is too dry, it will be brittle & crack or chip more easily. This time of year with all the mud, hoof conditioner is not really necessary more than a few times a month, but speak with the horse is farrier to see what is best for him. Cleaning his hooves with a damp hoof brush everyday is fine.
