Okay my friend wants a horse really bad and l have a horse and she dosent know the responsibility that goes with having one so can you tell her how hard it is???

Make her hang out with you every minute when you are with your horses for at least a month. The first time she has something else to do, let her know right then that the horse needs care, and her other stuff will have to wait. See how she handles that.

No my job to question someone that does not listen. seriously.

If they have been told multiple times and refuse.. they just need to learn the old fashioned way.

take her with u to ur yard for a month like the other person said!

make her do everything!!! espicialy the smelly jobs! u be there on hand to advise her ect but make her do it all. see how long before hse makes excuses, im ill, l cant family comitments ect.

she wont last very long though to be honest she if her parents thought she was ready she would have 1 by now.

shes probably another ''my little pony'' horse wannabe. =/

im sorry thats harsh. l dont even know her. but there has to be a reason on why she hasnt got 1 already. either her financial situation aint good or she just plain isnt ready!

Well, have her do chores with you- IME, most people do not want to stick it through, & start whining 10 min in.

Maybe bring her with to a show or something- Have her help u get ready for it, help during it, ect. ect. Although this doesnt stress the long term commitment, it includes many things that most people do not want to do. l mean, at shows l have to get up at 4, wash him 2 or 3 times a day ( l have a grey, obviously), clean his sheath (ok not needed for a show but it DOES need to be done, & its yucky to most people) , go out in the cold show barn at 6 am to feed, dump water, groom, find my number, tack up, find my number again, last min groom, ride. Then walk the cross country course 3+ times, tack up, ride, ect ect..its usually a 6 AM-10 PM thing, for 2-3 days. After going through this, it might deter them.

Or maybe u could write up how much ur horse has cost u so far. Try to remember what u paid for him, tack, feed, board, ect. ect. If u arnt sure guesstimate up. If common sense doesnt work, then maybe the numbers might.

Be prepared if nothing works, they might just go through with it. In which case, they will either sink or swim. Just make sure u dont make such a fuss now that u make it so they either get really mad at u or just tune u out- later on, if they get a horse, u have to be able to make suggestions to them & have them listen.

Well, good luck. l know someone like this- the jury is still out on how it has worked out.

Tell her to picture this:

Imagine having a horse that needs to be ridden, fed, cleaned, & cared for everyday. Imagine not going to the mall, not getting any new & nice clothes, & not being able to buy anything nice for yourself, because u r spending every hard earned penny on ur horse so he can have a stall to sleep in. Imagine paying a fortune every time the vet & farrier comes out to see ur horse. Imagine not being able to go to parties, or go out with any friends & enjoy yourself because u r too busy taking care of ur horse. Imagine walking ur horse for hours when he suddenly falls ill. Imagine paying hundreds of dollars for supplements for ur horse. Imagine doing back braking chores around the stable (like carrying hay bales, or water buckets).the list goes on & on. As much fun it is to own horses, there is so much more that comes with it than it looks. The learning journey never ends with horses.

haha well why not tell her all the expenses first.

farrier
vet
dentist
tack
grooming
first aid
clothing
saddle pads
blankets
bell boots
.on & on & on. haha

then u can tell her how early she has to wake up,
how she has to ride every week,
EVEN on the cold days,
the early morning horse shows,
the waiting till its 12 at night to make sure ur horse poops because ur worried hes colicing!?

just lay it all out to her, if shes not ready? she is not ready.

First just explain to her what ur daily schedule looks like. What time u have to get up, what chores u have to do, & that u MUST do ALL of this EVERY DAY! Then Tell her what the costs are:
Feed/Board, Vet bills (which can be astronomical!), farrier costs, initial purchase, how much tack costs, not to mention show fees, clinic & trailering costs, etc. Tell her some of the the thing that can go wrong, & how u prevent illness. Also explain what is involved in upkeep of facilities, remove any toxic plants from ur pasture ( These can kill horses, easily!), upkeep of the arena, cleaning stalls & tack. If she still seems interested, ask her to help u with all of ur chores for a day. have he spend the night, get up when u do, feed, & do all that fun stuff. If she still seems willing to do all of that, l guess she really does have what it takes to be an owner! If by the end of the day, she still seems perky, invite her to go for a ride. luckily, it is not AL work!

take her to the barn with you one day, and explain the schedule out to her and all the hard ''dirty'' work we have to do. some things are:

feeding
mucking
watering
grooming/tacking horses
exercising horses
turning horses out
and a WHOLE bunch of other stuff.

if you think your friend might be able to handle all this, and more, then she is probably suited to get a horse!

My husband wanted a horse too. So l had him feed my horse 3x a day, muck his paddock and clean his stall every day, clean water buckets and showed him how much it cost. Telling him how hard it was did not matter, he had to see for himself.

He did change his mind.

have her horsesit for a weekend. then she will know what its like to muck out a stall 3 times a day, feed, throw hay, fill water buckets etc.
Callaway     Reply with quote
l think that your friend should lease first, that will show her only about half of the responsibility of owning a horse and it could help convince her parents she is ready for one if she sticks with it and learns how hard it is and copes well.
