Ok so l would love to become a parelli instructor in the future, l just wondered if there are any on, or anyone who knows one. If so, can you make a living out of it? Im just wondering if its worth getting some qualifications in college before going to train. l probably will anyway as a sort of back up plan, but l just wanna know if its possible to live off of the money you earn from teaching. thanks x

l think few people make loads of money from being a Parelli instructor alone. All the people l know who also 'do' Parelli treat it more as a hobby & either do it part time with a regular job, have other riding or equestrian qualifications, or r just lucky & have rich parents or husbands. To become a Parelli instructor would involve doing all the courses & stages the Parelli programme demands, including spending some time in America. To do all this would cost a lot of money, if u can then get into the Parelli team & do shows & such, u might make some money, but as u probably know, there r few real 'stars' out there! The best & most successful equine behaviour experts l have met have looked into all aspects of horse behaviour & considered all the different training methods available & then designed their own programme of working with difficult horses. Most horse owners only want to try Parelli or similar if they have encountered a problem with their horse. Some horse owners r put off by the perceived rigidity of the Parelli programme & would prefer to consult someone who calls themselves a horse behaviourist, rather than Parelli instructor. There is also still some silly competition going on with Monty Roberts, Kelly Marks, etc., as to who is methods r best. Basically they all try & develop a better relationship with horses, which can only be a good thing. l think it might make sense if u considered either a back up career, or worked towards BHS qualifications which will at least enable u to work as a riding instructor or similar & then still do Parelli in ur spare time & see where it leads you. Who knows, u might be amazing & do shows & write books in the future! Wishing u best of luck!

l certainly do not think it is a very high paying job, but probably very rewarding. You have to go through all the qualifications, courses, & then build up u 'star ratings'. You will also have to understand that u will start 'small'. Look into joining their Tour Team & that will probably give u enough insight into the inner-workings of their operation that u will know whether or no u really want to go for it. l am guessing it costs a lot of money to start, & will take a long time to really make a profit, but the emotional rewards will be worth it. You will very likely start by mopping the floors, at their centers, & build u way up, working long hours. If u r very lucky, u may become one of Pat is protegee, which will give u a huge boost.
l & my parents know a 3-star Parelli instructor fairly well & have taken lessons from her. She does not make a lot of money, but it is enough. She lives in a trailer on premises, but has a nice, big indoor arena, large pastures & runs a pretty nice operation. As far as l know, she loves what she does, & frequently goes back to Pagosa Springs, CO for more training courses. As far as l know, u not only r required to take the general training courses in Parelli, but also Educator courses on how to teach people, & then a specialty course if u want to specialize in something (like problem horses or yearlings).
It is a lot of work, but l think if u r passionate about horses & Parelli, u should go for it!!! Check out the link below & try to contact an instructor & ask them about it - they r probably more than happy to help. Good luck & l hope it works out for u - goodness knows we need more Parelli instructors out there.
