l got an older Quarter Horse for my daughter a few weeks ago. He is about 20 years old and a real sweetheart. He does however have arthritis from being used as a gaming horse in his younger years. Other than that he is very healthy, no sway back, no feet problems, and his teeth still look good. l have him on a senior joint powder and l just sprinkle it on some grain. As long as he gets it twice a day he is fine. So that is where my question comes in. l need some suggestions on what grain to get him. Right now he is just getting a scoop of my foals development grain. We have an Aslin-Finch in town as well as a Big R. What brands would you suggest? l have heard good and bad things about Equine Senior. What about LMF? l usually do not buy grain for my horses (except the foal who will only get it till she turns 2) so l am a little unsure which brands are really good. He is not underweight or a hard keeper at all. In fact he looks great and really enjoys the short rides with my daughter. Thanks.

l have used Purina, Nutrena, Seminole and FRM. Each of them caused the senior horses that l used it on (3 different geldings at different times) to have uncontrolled diarrhea. l do not use senior feeds, but use a high quality pellet from one of the above brands. If the horse is healthy and has his teeth l do not believe they need a ''senior'' feed.

its all-american ingredients and they do all their own research.
nutrena and most of the other brands just copy their work and ideas.

equine senior is great, l feed it to all my elder horses and can not say a bad thing about it

also think about getting some glucosamine treats. you can order them from country supply and they help with joints and arthritis. probably a little bit cheaper than joint powder and l think it works better.

l feed my almost 28 year old pony Triple Crown Senior. l only started using it about a year & a half ago when he started doing poorly. It made a huge difference & allowed me to feed him enough to keep weight on as he has gradually stopped eating hay at all.

If ur horse is doing well, he might not need a senior grain yet, but it can not hurt because it will have lots of fiber (hay replacement) in it, & will be loaded with vitamins & minerals, all in a more easily digestible form.

l use Purina Equine Senior and have for many years. My vet has done quite a bit of research on feeds and she recommends Purina Senior for adult horses of any age. My gelding used to colic periodically, but has not since l put him on senior feed. He is 22 and out 24/7 with a run in, stays in good condition and literally is never sick.
