I am adopting this horse from my barn, he foundered a long time ago, but not to severe.I've been around horses my whole life, but have not dealt with founder. l just wanted to know how easy it is for a horse to founder again.
He is still and rideable and healthy.
He is coming to live on my property.
He is an American Saddlebred, Saddleseat.

l wouldnt get the horse if he had foundered. Most horses that do founder, will do it again.
But before you adobt him, you could get a vet to come out and check the horse, and he could tell you the horses state, and if he would be likly to founder again.
:D

It depends on how bad he foundered. A mild founder years ago is not serious.

if when he foundered and it wasnt that severe or bad then he should be ok:-) good luck with him!

When he foundered a while ago, was it due to something like escaping into the grain room and pigging out on food? if it was an extreme situation like that, where any horse would have foundered, he probably isnt prone to it. If he foundered from rich summer grass you will have to manage his diet more, because he is probably more sensitive than most horses. if that is the case, it is likely that it will occur again without management. hope this horse works out for you! =]

l had a gelding who foundered on the rears when he was 3; he came out of it fine, barrel raced his whole life, lived to 30 before he had to be put down due to unrelated factors. Founder is NOT the death sentence is was even a few years ago; science & farriery have come a long way. If u do just a few quick google searches u will find some amazing information; there r quite a few great farrier forums that can advise you, as well. Do not turn a good horse down just because of a founder incident.

l own a Saddlebred too and he has trouble with his hooves a good bit, but he has never foundered or anything serious. Just make sure that you look at his hooves every time you ride, before and after. But as long as you keep him a healthy weight, watch what he eats, clean out his stall, and do not let him have to stay in a certain area such as a stall for too long (more than a day) and as long as the founder was not too severe then l would not worry too much about it.

With founder/laminitis, u never know. Do u know what caused it the first time? If it was not grass, then it would be unlikely for the situation to come up again. He could be fine with good management, or he could be a chronic founderer. You should probably get him a grazing muzzle to use in the spring & fall just to be on the safe side.

l have a 28 year old pony who foundered badly in 1999. I've had him since 2001 & he wears a grazing muzzle in the spring & fall, & has been just fine. My farrier always says his feet r looking great, & my young son rides him at all gaits & infrequent jumping up to 18'' (that is my son is limit, not necessarily the pony's).

In my experience horses that have foundered are simply more prone to foundering again. This just means that you will have to be extra specially aware of the rationing of his feed and that he is getting the proper amount of exercise. l was raised on a ranch, and we never had a horse founder one time. they either never foundered, or foundered more than once. But with proper diet, exercise, and nutrition your chances of a reoccurrance are greatly diminished.
