Breed : Gypsy Cob
Age: 7

Has anyone ever heard of this? The horse has swelling to pasterns, scabs and crusties, cauliflower growths on heels and it looks like the coronary band is disconnecting from the hooves. New growth on the top of the coronary band is thick red and crusty soft hanging slightly over the hoof. The chestnuts are also falling off. This is happening in all 4 of the hooves.
trust me they are getting red and falling off. leaving an oozing wound.
This horse has been seen by 5 Vets and 3 Farriers and they are clueless. The horse has been thru immune booster, antibiotics, antifungals daily soaks and this has been going on for 5 months. l have never seen anything like this before either and would love to know if anyone has every seen this before. This horse is shedding all 4 hooves and the hoof is not growing back but a soft crusty thick band '' diseased growth'' is growing instead.
l looked up things and the closest l can find is Coronary Band Dystrophy but l am not sure.
This is not Mud Fever. Just think about your horses flesh seperating from the whole hoof and then growing a 2'' wide by 1'' thick diseased growth over the top of the hoof all around it.
l am asking this .... l was on the farm call with the vet today we meet the farrier there with the owner and this is the most amazing thing we have ever seen. This horse was seen by a specialist atRood and Riddle Equine Hospital and they was unsure of it too. l was hoping to get some leads before the horse is destroyed the lady is frantic.

The cauliflower growths sounds like dew poisoning aka scratches, mud fever, grease heel. Totally cureable. Are the chestnuts just flaking off? l do not think they r actually falling off. Chestnuts do shed, & u can peel off the layers. If the hair is long by the pasterns, cut it off if u can, & treat the skin with an antibiotic salve from the vet. Scrub them down with a mild betadine scrub, apply the salve. Clean every day. It will clear up in about a week if not too severe. Otherwise u will need to see a vet. Its cause from too much moisture on the skin without getting a chance to dry, & sometimes certain weeds/grasses can cause it.

Sounds like it could be mud fever.

http://greenacres-stud.com/mudfever.htm

Mud Fever is a common condition, usually affecting horses lower limbs; especially the back legs, & particularly if they r white. It is characterised by inflammation of the skin, & the appearance of crusty scabs, formed from oozing serum. This is usually caused by the invasion of a bacterium called dermatophilus congolensis, which penetrates the skin following either damage, or softening through exposure to the wet or mud. The bacterium thrives in wet muddy conditions, & our increasingly mild & wet winters r escalating the prevalence of this troublesome condition. When the same condition occurs on the upper body, it is referred to as Rain Scald.

Sounds like grease heel to me (mud fever, scratches etc.) It can be fixed. Clip the hair if it is long, scrub with medicated scrub & put a medicated salve on it. Hard to wrap that area, but it can be done. You need to keep them as dry as possible & out of water, & weeds. The chestnuts naturally flake off, but do not fall off. As for hoof sloughing, u need a vet.. if they r going concave, u may be looking at founder & they need x-rayed.

**Just read ur addition. pretty serious. Hard to beleive a vet has no clue.

**** l just read this about CBD..Though l have had cases of coronary band disease, one quadrilateral, we eventually got all the cases cured. Apparently l have never had a true case of CBD since by definition it is not treatable so the information on CBD has been gleaned from research into the condition & not personal experience.

Taking ur questions in order:
1) Yes this is possible enough that it should be pursued.
2) CBD, by definition, is not responsive to treatment so ur temporary treatment success suggests this may be something else. Do not forget topical steroids were given so along with infectious causes this may be an allergic or autoimmune problem.
3) It depends on the severity of the damage but the horses l have seen with chronic coronitis & wall damage did not become lame do to wall quality but because of sores on the coronet. Laminitis is not reported in the literature with CBD.
4) Cases will differ in their severity & rate of progression. The CBD is not fatal but some may find the chronic dermatitis / keratitis difficult to live with & if the sores bad enough elect euthanasia.
5) Your next step needs to be decided by ur veterinarian but since u have had one effective therapy, u & ur vet might consider a much longer course of that exact same therapy.

Otherwise follow the diagnostic/therapeutic recommendations in the article Kathy. If u decide to biopsy it is important that the horse be off therapy for about 14 days before taking the sample. By carefully trying to rule in or out the similar looking diseases listed in the article u know u r doing all u can do for ur horse as they r usually treatable.

It is an absesse or ''gravel''. Usually a defect in the white line has allowed an infection to occur. A build up of puss causes pressure and lameness. It is treatable. Soak in epsom salt 8 times a day for 15 minutes. Talk to your vet about this. If you post pictures l can ask my equine biology teacher.

l would assume the swelling is due to infection/ pain response. l would have the vet do blood work.
