Well unfortanely, my horse that l have known since l was five... has past away just friday morning. Iy hurts to look outside and not see him, the farm just doesnt feel a bit close to when it used to.
l just wanted to know why did he die and how??? he wasnt that old, only ten, he acted fine, running the herd like the great leader he was, and would show no pain.... nothin. the only thing l might know how he died is that my grand father said when he came over to load him up to take him to the grave that blood was running down his nose, it might have been an internal infection but what kind....
also what are the other 7 horses going to do without there leader??? and if you ever had something like this happen to you, please tell l just want ot know that there is soemone out there that know how l feel.

He probably died because of some internal problem.

It is always hard to lose an animal you care for--but it does not get any easier when they're older. You can always have an autopsy done, though that is a bit expensive.
Really sorry, kid. You're in my thoughts.

l am so sorry about your horse. Your Grandfather is right. It sounds like something internal, it might have been cancer. Animals can be funny. They do not always let us know when they do not feel right.

Blood out the nose usually signifies brain aneursym.

l know exactly how you feel l grew up with this horse that was very special to me. He only died at 13 years old because he had a tumor and when they were going to remove it they found he had another tumor so we had to put him down. It was very sad, and l was wasnt happy for a while, im really sorry to hear about your horse and l know exactly how you feel. It takes time to get over it.

Horses should not be used in slave labor - just because it is accepted within society it does not mean that these great creatures were meant for such physical strain.
Horses can die of many causes but often those which r used often to carry out demanding physical tasks will wear down & may develop internal problems much sooner.
Set the rest of the horses free into a large forest suitable for them to survive & know their true rights to live without the taste of steel & burden.

l am really sorry for your loss, it is never easy.
It could have been a brain tumor or similar , putting pressure on his head and eventually killing him - these can often have no real indication they're there until they're too late.
The horses will cope without their leader, the horse below him will likely take control and the herd will cope.

If he had blood running down his nose, then it sounds like something to do with the brain. Brain aneurysm or tumor maybe? sorry for your loss =[

l am sorry to hear about ur horse. Blood out of the nose tends to mean some sort of brain trauma, either impact that caused the swelling, brain aneurysm etc. When the lead horse dies the horse ''second'' in line, steps up & becomes the new leader. You r smart to recognize this may upset the rest of the herd & there will be an adjustment for the other horses even if they do not openly reflect it. l noticed when my lead mare past away in August that the barn was quiet & she spent much of her last hours nose to nose with the horse ''second'' in command whom up until that time did not even like. It almost seemed as though she knew she was going to die & was giving him some last instructions. He is now the leader & has proven to be very effective & calming on the herd. Thankfully losing a male horse is not as traumatic on the herd as losing a lead mare, whom r known for actually being the leaders & watchers of the entire herd. This contrary to the belief that stallions r actually the herd leaders.

l am sorry that ur horse died. l have been in a similar circumstance with a Pug dog named Sandi who passed at age 6 with cancer throughout her body We had no idea she was sick, until it was too late. l mourned her loss for a long time because it was unexpected as it was for ur horse. l am by no way a veterinarian, but growing up on a farm myself, l think maybe it could have been some kind of hemmorage, perhaps from the brain. As far as ur other seven horses, most animals adapt & u have many horses. They will bond together & their instincts will take over & they will adjust. You r grieving also, but it is part of the start of the healing process. Your beloved animal came into ur life for a reason as well as its departure. There is perfection in everything in life, even if we do not understand at the time. By reading ur question, l sense a caring, loving, person & u will make it through, plus u have seven others waiting for ur love.

Blood coming out of the nose can also be a sign of a horse with a stone. ''Stones'' r created by a horse eating hay, or grass & swallowing a pebble or something solid & the horse is body builds calcium around it making it larger & larger until for some reason, the horse is system tries to move it down the intestinal track & it blocks everything. The horse tries & tries to move it & can not.
IF there r oak trees & acorns on ur property & ur horses eat them, there maybe another cause. They can be FINE one day & dead the next.

He could have had a heart attack, or some internal issue. l know people who were just riding, or at a show & their horse just drops dead. Seemingly healthy at Mid gallop, mid course, after warm up- heart gives out. It could be disease, but u would have noticed symptoms before.
As for the remaining horses- The next most dominant horse will take the place as ''leader''. They might bicker a bit, but prolly the pecking order was established long ago, & the next in line will just move into the position. Not that its a position- basically all ''leader'' is is that they can bite any other horse for something & not ge much retaliation.
You will be sad, but u will get over it with time.
EDIT: l agree with mulereiner about Jhon..god what an idiot. Hello, horses lived on the plains anyways. And r so domesticated, by this point, they wouldnt last long. If they didnt starve, they would die of a parasite overlode, disease, injury, or predation! If u want to be a crazy PETA obsessionist, fine, but think about what u r saying & where! Hello, this person just lost her horse! Have some compassion.

l am sorry for ur loss. l had the same thing happen with a 9 year old mare. She was perfectly fine, & had been ridden 2 days before l found her dead. There was no signs on the ground of her rolling or struggling at all, & not a drop of blood. l will never know for sure what did it, but it was probably some kind of failure in the circulatory system like a burst aorta or something.
Your other 7 horses will adjust. A new leader will emerge from the pack. There could be a little trouble amongst some of them until they work it out but it should be resolved quickly.

l am so sorry for your loss. It is hard to know what caused his death, but it is often a sudden death event like the heart stopping or a ruptured aneurysm when an otherwise healthy horse passes away like this. The other horses will re-establish the pecking order, and adapt to him being gone. For now, just go ahead and have a good cry..or 20..it is awful to go through this, and it is good to just let yourself grieve.
