He is six years old, 16.3hh, and we've just started getting back in shape...lately, i've noticed he is got a runny (yellow) snotty nose and he is coughing a bit, but it is not chronic.
l took his temp. today, 99.9..which l know is normal. We just started him on Omega Horseshine and we're wondering if that is the problem. We've stopped givingit to him today, and he has not had much of an appeteit.
We have him on 1 1/2 scoops of XTN and a 1/2a scoop of sweet feed, and he gradually eats it all throughout the night. We're cutting back on his food and he is getting a few days off of work.
He needs to gain a bit of weight, too, so if anybody also has food suggestions? let me know. We've tried Ultium and he does not seem to like it...he only eats alfalfa hay...nothing else. he hates the rest of it. He does not like apples, or any treats other than peppermint treats. He does not really even like grass! only clover!
l know TBs are picky eaters..but l think this is the pickiest as they come.
We trailer him over to my trainer is place once a week...and he gets worked quite a bit throughout the week...so l do not really think it is stress...I am thinking maybe just a cold?

l just went out to look at his water, he is not drinking.
l called the vet..but it is 8:37 here, l live in alabama, and he wo not be able to come out til 5. I am going to call our backup vet and see if he can come out sooner. He is not grazing...and he does get a lot of hay at night because we have barely any grass.
Like l said, no temperature, snotty nose, mild cough, lethargic, no appeteit and not drinking.
As soon as we get the vet out, i will let you guys know what all goes down.

no, he does not have strangles...i know how to check for that and he does not haveit.
he is drinking a bit, so I am just thinking he is got a cold.
when his teeth were floated, the vet used an automatic grinder....and we have not previously had any problems with it.

He has bronchitis. Thank you to all who've answered. He is on antibiotics twice daily and he gets 1000lbs worth of banamine once a day.
he is getting 2 weeks off of work.
He should be ok in about 10 days. We're taking him into the vet tomorrow to get scoped.

l think you should hav a vet come over and take a look he will no what to do

Vet might need to give a antibiotic shot & he could probably use a dose of probiotics

l am a horse owner myself and in my opinion, l would have called the vet the very first time l saw the yellow discharge coming from his nose. It could be just a cold, but it could also mean a more serious condition other than a cold. For your horse is health, you need to call the vet.

l would for sure keep monitoring it.

My horse gets like that in the fall and spring due to allergies but never a loss of appetite. If l where you l would try calling your vet and describing the symptoms.

As long as the symptoms are not getting worse and he is drinking and hopefully gets his appetite back l would not panic. Otherwise l do not know what to say.

l have a thoroughbred tooo, also a 19hh percheron. my percheron had a ''cold'' a while back, with the same symptoms. we had the vet come out, & put him on antibiotics. he took 20 pills 2 times a day, & after all the pills were gone, he was not coughing or snotting anymore. my thoroughbred is really picky, as well. hes an off track race horse, but we have finally got him to take treats from us(: hay is a big part of a horses diet, they r a grazing animal, & thats what helps the weight. l live in ohio, so its pretty cold, if u live where its colder, theres a higher chance it could be a type of cold. if there really is coughing involved, l would get a vet check. good luck (:

Do not you think it is silly to tell the little kiddies to stay away from your answer because this is so ''serious and yet you have not even bothered to call a vet?

Yellow snot and a cough is not good, is not a substitute for a vet. Do not even bother asking these kinds of questions here.

You're sure its not strangles? Its possible (though unusual) to have strangles, or the very similar strep z. without a significant temp.

Other possibilities - gutteral pouch infection. Is he snotty on one side or both? Infected tooth. Possibly a chronic lung infection.

At any rate, l think he needs antibiotics - it might be a good idea to get some extra from ur vet, so the next time u need them, u wo not have to wait until the vet can come out.

If he is not drinking, & is getting dehydrated (do the pinch test on his neck) get a big syringe & use it to force some salt water into him.

As far as feeds go - can u try different brands? l am very fond of Buckeyes Cadence, & Ultra cadence. Its very digestible, full of good things, & it smells like granola bars - yummy!

l think you shouldve just called the vet. . . l do not care what goes down, but you should've thought before asking that they only you would get were just to call the vet.

Check his teeth, when was the last time you got them floated? Maybe he just has a cold and a toothache. Hope he gets better soon. Good luck.

l am in California & if l have a horse who is starting to look a bit ''ribby'' or I've purchased some rack of bones, l go out & buy a 50LB sack of A&M (Ground alfafa & molasses) (In the mid west they use beet pulp BUT I've been informed that u HAVE to add water to it or it will swell in a horse is belly causing colic), dump it into a tub or feeder in the horse is stall, then top it with some rolled barley corn that is mixed with corn oil & apple cider vinegar. ( l feed a 3LB coffee can of the barley corn mixture once a day.) The horse will normally devour the first couple of bags of A&M, but then they will slack off as they get used to it (Never had an issue with colic or founder).

l have not fed oats or any mixed feed in decades, basically because I've had running horses & TBs l am trying to keep quiet, so l feed the rolled barley corn mixture to them for weight, NOT heat.

l also give my horses a hot bran mash twice a week with a 1/2 CUP of apple cider vinegar & corn oil ( l can mix the barleycorn into it.). l feed 1/2 a 3 LB coffee can of red wheat flakey bran & add enough water to it so that it looks like oatmeal in consistancy.

l make sure that they get 2 flakes of alfafa hay per feeding.

With the yellowish discharge, have a vet check him out & u can feel underneath his chin & jaw for any sort of abcess growing. It could mean strangles, pigeon fever, dryland distemper. Add some electrolytes to his water & make sure he drinks.

Is it possible that its strangles? I'd monitor him carefully & if there is not an improvement definitley call the vet. Make sure he is drinking. If u have other horses I'd keep him sparate even if it is just a cold. Does it get cold in the winter where u are, does he have a blanket? As far as gaining weight goes, l do not know if he is the kind of horse that gets hyped up but both beet pulp & bran worked when my horse started losing weight. You might want to try increasing hay before adding to his grain. Maybe try giving him an extra flake or two.

Obviously ur vet will be along soon & can give u better advise then strangers on the internet, but in the meantime.

How is ur horses manure? Is it runny, normal, or dry? Can u see bits of undigested feed or hay in it?

Were his teeth floated by hand or was a power tool used? On RARE occasions power tools can cause issues in the pulp of the tooth, making a horse sick.

Does he have any issues with being girthed or saddle? He may have ulcers.

l do not know how many pounds r in a scoop, or what XTN is. l would ask ur vet about his feed regimen.

In order to tempt him to eat/drink u can make him a slurry of senior feed if u have any around, say 1/2 lb senior + a cup of applejuice + 24 oz warm water. Senior feed is farily gentle on the tummy & easily digestible.

Well you should call the vet first and see what they say. l would say they would probably put him atibiotics and maybe some pills. But it could just be some cold going around.My Quarter Horse is nose was running for like 3 days and she had a bit of a cough l called the vet and they just said to keep an eye on her and if anything changed to call them and they would come out. l hope he gets better! You horse may have a respiratory infection. One of my horses got one when l stabled her at a horse show barn. Same kind of thing. Go down to the feed store , get some penicillin, and ask them about how much to give him.
