As an experienced farrier l was thinking of what other services l could offer my clients. l already clean mares between their teats really without thinking about it when l am checking to see how sensitive they are on their bellies. Since most farriers see your horse at least 6 times a year he can keep your gelding clean about every 6 months and can save you from a vet field call since he/she is already their. l already checked with my vet here in Oklahoma and he said that since the sheath cleaning is basically considered a grooming procedure a farrier can do this procedure but only on horses that do not need sedation if they do then a vet is required. Is their any farriers that already do this for their clients? Is there anybody that has a farrier that does this for them or would have their farrier do it if offered?
ok l dont think l said anything about mares having sheaths but like male horses, mares get smegma between their teats and needs to be cleaned and in most cases comes off alot easier in a long strip.

l always use KY jelly l have used everything at one time or another but l prefer KY because with the cold weather it is not always possible to use water to rinse if it is cold.

Even though l asked this question lhave done sheath cleaning on horses that l just could not leave after trimming their hooves without cleaning the sheath because it looked so bad and l have never charged the horse owner.

Costs: this really depends on the are of the farrier and the horse owners ability to pay, for me l could charge $15-20 there are areas like in southern nevada that a vet charges $50 to clean a sheath and $100+ for a field call so a farrier could charge $35-45 for a sheath clean.

Gallop l have no problem showing someone that doesnt know how to clean the sheath
Burdfour l have found that most horse owners have a fear of touching their horses genitals, some think its gross, some don’t understand the concept that it needs to be cleaned, others because of the fear of hurting their horse, but l would say most don’t do it because it entails touching a horses penis and its easier to have a vet come out and do it no matter what it costs. Me personally l have never had those problems l believe that every horse owner needs to be able to touch every part of a horses body both male or female

Neither of the farriers in my area offer this, & l myself would not pay for this service, l know my girlfriends (3) & my sister would not either. This is something we have always done, l think there might be a few out there that will pay for it, & know a few that pay the vet, so if ur cost is less, then l think u have a great idea & it is worth the try. l know my cousin she hates it & pays her vet & if u saved her some funds she would glade pay:) Great idea & best of luck.

I've never thought about a farrier doing that, but l know that is certainly one chore that l will pay to avoid.

If your horse is quiet while he works on him then I'd pay him a few extra bucks because he probably could use it and it is gonna be a heck of a lot more if you have the vet do it. Better yet, get the farrier teach YOU how to clean it! In all the years I've had geldings/stallions I've NEVER had anybody else but me (Unless l am teaching kids how to do it.)

l might, if he/she charged the right amount for it. l would not use soaps if l were you, since u could be accused of causing irritations from leaving soap inadequately rinsed. If l were you, l would use K-Y jelly (that is what l use) which is water soluble & can not cause irritation. No one could accuse u of causing an irritation that may occur normally just from the cleaning being performed, since there would be nothing to cause it but the act of cleaning. Plus, ur job would be easier since it does not require rinsing, being that the K-Y is water soluble. l think it is a good idea, & could be very much in demand.

ADD...I'd probably go for it for around $25.00. That is because l can do it myself, & l have to justify what l spend to my husband who thinks if l can do it myself, then why should l pay for it. but at $25.00 l think l could talk him into it. But there r many people who do not do it themselves who might pay more.

ADD..if u teach them how to do it, u may lose customers !

Depending on the bill, l would definitely consider paying the farrier to clean the sheaths in the same trip as trimming their feet.it would save some time and, for those that have the vet come out to do it, it would save a trip, & probably money, to just have the farrier do everything at once.

~Come to think of it, when l worked at the racetrack, one of the farriers that came out to shoe the horses would also clean the geldings' sheaths if needed. l do not know what he charged extra for doing so, though.

l am dumbfounded!! People r paying that much to clean a sheath? l remember being 9 years old & shown how to properly groom & bath the beautiful horse l was about to get & it was not a pleasant task but a necessary one. If people r paying out instead of doing the task themselves then where do l sign up??????The only time l have ever heard of a vet having to do it was when it was neglected to be done in the first place. l think if people want to pay for it then by all means slap that charge on ur list of services & their invoice!

If they do not require sedating, why would not the owner do it themselves?
