My horse has a bad habit of turning her back end towards whoever tries to take her from her stall, and unfortunately she usually has hay in her stall then too which makes her more upset. How can l get her safely from her stall without her threatening to kick me? no she has not kicked me yet, but i'm afraid she may b/c she looks irritated

If u know she wont kick you, then just keep trying to catch her from her stable, even if it means running around after her all day, & she will soon learn that she cant win. Because if when u want to go in & see her & she turns her back & u immediately walk away, u know she has got away with it. If she still wont come to you, try making her a feed & show her the bucket until she walks up to you, but do not give her any! if after that she is god with u & does not want to turn her bum at u any more, then give her some feed as a reward, she will soon learn. But the important thing is to not be afraid of her, u show her who is boss!! xx Good luck, hope this helped xxxx

Anytime u go in ur horse is stall, she should stand at attention & put her focus on you. Since ur horse is not doing this, l suggest that u take a lunge whip into the stall with you. You need a lunge whip as this is the only kind that will enable u to touch the horse without getting in the kick zone. If she does not turn to face you, u should poke her with the whip - not strike, not beat, just touch or tap her with it. Your objective here is to be annoying, not hurt. As soon as she turns around to face the annoyance, u stop & u praise her. Soon, she will learn that if she faces you, she does not get an annoying poke in the butt.
You must be very careful to stay outside the kick zone as u do this. Also, l would suggest removing the hay first thing when u r getting ready to work with her so that she can concentrate on you.

OK listen carefully, this can not be allowed because she may start to kick. So here is how to train them not to try this. Keep a broom handle near the stall door. Everytime they turn their rump to u poke them (no need to hit just a poke). Make sure u poke them in the same area each time. If they do not turn poke them again. Repeat without a pause of more than about 1/2 to 1 second until they turn their rump away from you. Then stop immediately. At first be happy with them just turning their rump away from u but eventually u want to use the handle to guide their head to you. Soon they will start coming to u when u open the door.

that is a sign a disrespect dont let your horse do that because then your horse will think that she can get away with more things and what you dont need is a 1200 or so pound animal bossing you around not good

My horse Terra tries to do this to me too. She will only do it when she is eating, but u have to control the horse. If she thinks she is in control, she will take advantage of u & the situation. She knows u r scared of her at that moment, so she does it to prevent being caught.
What l do is kiss to her & make her come up to me, instead of going to her. She will respond to my call & when she gets close enough, l hold her head with my arm & get the halter on her. Sometimes she will start to move to the back of her stall while l am doing it, but l just keep holding onto her head & control her so that she knows l am alpha. It is easy now & l do not have problems with her like l did in the beginning.
Good luck & keep me posted on ur luck with her!
Kenzie
P.S- Do not let her know u have the halter in ur hands when u call her. She will know what is going on.
----Edit----
Another thing that intimidates soooo many riders is when they look at the horse as a giant animal that can hurt them. l am aware of that, but l pretend my horse is a dog when she acts up. What would u do if ur dog was misbehaving like that? You certainly would not be scared, instead u would correct its behavior & be the alpha dog. This helps me gain courage with her instead of feeling scared of what she can do. It may help because horses r no different than any other animal- they must be dominated. Again, good luck. (:

Bring a treat whenever you catch her. It sounds like she does not like people or her job at the moment so bringing a treat will perk her up a bit. Peppermint wrappers will get her attention when she goes to turn around. Eventually she will enjoy being caught as long as a treat is involved. Good luck =)

l had a stud colt that did this & also a mare that did this. When l opened up the door both would pin their ears & stick their head in the corner & show their butt.tail tucked firm.
l always had a lead line or a lunge whip & smacked them over & over til they moved their butt away from me & their head out of the corner. l did not whip them.just smacked them enough to irritate them.
Once the colt started backing to me & THEN l took the whip & smacked him enough to sting. He no longer showed his butt or tried to kick.
l have always made it a point to go after the horse that shows his butt to me.it is the biggest form of disrespect to give me without touching me! :)

l keep a buggy whip in the barn & will swat any rear end that dosnt turn away from the door when l enter it. This is a huge problem where l work because the old staff thought that all animals should be wild & free, & that Time Out in a stall for bad behavior would work...
Dont allow it. A horse is a large animal & can hurt or kill u with a kick. Make them turn to face you, poke, swat or prod them just hard enough to get the reaction u want. DO NOT, no matter how good a idea it seems use treats to try & lure them to turn, All ur doing is rewarding bad behavoir that way.
out in the field any animal that crowds or shows his tail to me gets hit with a tin can filled with gravel, my keys or even a feed bucket if need be. Its working, but then l deal with horses, cows, a bull, alpaca is sheep, & a ram out there & l have to be the boss at all times.
