l am purchasing two horses. l know nothing! l do not know if it will be a stock trailor or a closed in trailor, so l am bringing coolers just in case (from the wind chill factor if its a stock), and l do not know how these horses trailor. My father is findind a friend with one, so we are not sure, and the guy said they trailor okay, but he had no trailor to show me, and he thought they did alot of other things okay that they didn't... l am bringing a garbage can of shavings, hay nets, hay, coolers, and halters since we are meeting up with the guy with the trailor, and l have scene my trainor load horses tons of times. she is not coming because she thinks l can do it myself and l need experience thats hands on like that. any little tips or anything?

Be patient! Start slow & remember not to push ur limits or get frustrated, it will just make the horse not want to do anything u want them to. Halter & lead both horses around for awhile, to & fro past the trailer. Show them the ramp one at a time, get ur dad to hold one etc.

Show one the ramp & if it is not spooky, take a couple of steps up before it & encourage it to follow. If it panics, just let it back off & walk it around & let it relax. Try again, be confident in what you're doing, even if it is just a bluff. If u r really having trouble, try luring it in with a bucket of feed.

Repeat with the second. It is really not very difficult. If the guy thinks they r loadable, see if he can load them before u try. Make sure u get there early so u have all day to work with them in the worst possible scenario. Hope it helps & good luck. (:

Be prepared to take some time loading them. If they r not use to loading & traveling it may take a while to get them to be comfortable with the trailer. John Lyons taught that if a horse drops his head to sniff in the trailer, let him. It shows that he is thinking about the situation. Remember that u r asking an animal that is naturally wary of small spaces to get into an unusual area that can look very intimidating.
If there r windows in the front of the trailer that will let a bit more light in & create a look of openness, it usually helps to open them when loading a horse to help them feel less trapped.

Do not drive like you normally would. You need to take more time to slow down so you do not thought the horses forward in the trailer.
Take corners and turns much slower as well. Just think of how hard it would be to ride standing up and not hanging on to anything.
Oh and do not tail gate. Give your self plenty of time to stop.
Make sure the trailer tires are aired to the proper PSI.

you have to be the boss but dont push it. take the lead rope and walk into the trailer.dont look back the horse will get in sooner or later. once he is in tie him in there to get him used to it. then just keep doing that and he will get used to it.

Before loading them, l would try to buy them head bumpers/breakaway halters, or atleast some polo wraps for their legs, in case they Are not good at trailering, and flip out inside.
But be prepared to take [possibly] hours to load them. In the end, it is a battle of the wills.
