Can somebody please explain to me what 'notional' and 'actual' winnings are in BSJA? Thanks!!

Actual winnings r the amount the horse has actually won.

However, say u jumped in a final at a championship in a novice class & won £300 u would be out of not only novice classes, but also the next two classes up. So, the BSJA have 'notional' winnings which means although u may have won £300 in that novice class, u would notionally only have won £25.

That is an extreme example, most places the notional & actual prize money will be very similar, but it also means that prize money is fair regardless of location.

l live in the midlands & prize money is much less than down south. Teabag came from down south & has only been placed in 3 novice classes, but already has £68 actual on her card. £100 is the limit for jumping novice so although she clearly has not had much experience she would very soon be out of the class due to high prize money. Her notional winnings however r £38 which means she still has £62 left in novice.

Normally there is little difference between actual & notional winnings, like ion Teabag is case, but where there is a big difference it could indicate that the horse has done well at championship competitions. Best though if u r thinking of buying to ask for a BSJA printout from the owner (they can get it for free, u have to pay). This will show u when, where & in what classes the horse had winnings.

Notional winnings r always used to determine the level a horse is allowed to jump at.
