my Mare is 6 year old,and has foaled twice both colts,the Second foal is 5 weeks old and has started to jump at her behind, is this normal? we are novice breeders so we do not know to much about this subject.

it maybe a dominance if the mare has a problem with it she will tell him. most colts will only start sniffing and mounting mares intentionaly when there about 2

Yeah, its is normal.

my friends foal did it all the time, and the mare was not necessarily in heat at the time either.

l think it maybe be just a dominants thing and since they are developing, hormones are going crazy as well.

he could not actually reach up that far though.

Some colts will do this. Nothing special. The mare will put him in his place.

l just hope being u say u r a novice breeder that u r not breeding horses that can not be registered just because u want to have cute foals around. We have enough ''unwanted & grade'' horses out there with no home as it is. Also l would find an experienced breeder to work with. Because if u do not get the general attitudes of foals, & their behaviors u really should not be breeding.

Not trying to be mean but l am sick of seeing so much backyard breeding & unwanted horses. Especially with the economy so rotten right now even great papered horses r heading to auctions & many to out of country slaughter houses. Most grades do not stand a chance.

Yea, it may look a little odd but he is just playing! It when they get to the age of 2 u really should seperate & stop them!
This year my cousin clydesdales had 2 colts & a filly (unfortunatly the filly died in birth.)
But the two colts were always doing that! You should normally see the mother giving them a push away when they do that, but he is just playing so it is fine! No worries!
Unfortuatly our colts could actually reach up that far this year when they were about 2 months old. Since there sire is a 19.2hh & there mum only 17.1. The other mum was fortunate to be 18.2hh.

Good Luck with ur colt. They normally stop this at about 5 months old.

It is absolutely possible.

From the time frame, your mare is in estrus. Her hormones are transmitted to the foal via nursing. That is a potent cocktail Mom is serving up for dinner.
If you're surprised by 5 weeks, this behavior at 1 week would floor you!

What are you breeding? You have a mare and two colts? What breed?

It is highly possible! l had one who tried to do the ''mommy jump'' when his dam layed down to roll. While he was in mid air, his mommy decided to get up and sent him arse over tea kettle.

l dont think his actions should be interpetted as ''romantic''.LOL
young colts jump on their mothers and any other horsein the field with them. he is just being rowdy, and playing:)
ps. i'm sure you know better than to leave them together til he is 2. people who are too lazy to seperate foal and mother create a real problem for both horses. at about 5 months he should be weaned and sperated from her.

l agree. If you are novice, really go and work with an expert. Lots of horses are going to slaughter. l would suggest if you really want a cute one, buy a rescue one(if you know how to train). And plus theres lots for sale. I've even seen ads of foals that are not even born yet! Like their mothers are still pregnant and the ad says if you want to buy one of the foals when it is born.
