l wanna blanket clip my horses (well, my performance horses) but am new at it as this is my first year in a state Other than florida with my horses. l am now in indiana XD chilly!!
anyway does anyone know HOW to blanket clip/how to do the guide lies to do it? l can do a full body clip but blanket clipping? not so much. help please!!
also, it is going to be about 8 degrees here (for the HIGH, -10 for low)in the next few days. my yearling got bit by my QH so l cant blanket him since it is on his chest and will rub. and since my qh did it he is going to ''suffer'' as well and wont be getting blanketed. how cold is TOO cold for horses to go out? they both have good coats but l think 8 is really cold. the coldest they have seen so far this year is 20 is please let me know as tomorrow it will be dropppppping!

well one is a QH and is fuzzy and the yearling (19 mos) is an oldenburg and is very thick coated. but thanks!! l will prob turn them out for a few hours in mid afernoon when the sun is out and then bring em' back in!!!

but you guys need to read the post. im not retarded l said my PERFORMANCE HORSES need a body clip. they are worked very hard every day and sweat and have a heck of a time cooling down. im not going to clip my yearling OR my QH butmy 3 performance horses who are ridden heavily on a daily basis need a clip. and it is not rediculous not to blanket my horse for btiing the other. again, im not retarded l know my horse cannot go ''oh, im blanket less because he is and l bit him'' but im not worried about them freezing to death in 20 degrees when they are used to it. Also, they will not get ''stressed out'' from being from florida. they moved here in summer so have had pleanty of time to adjust, and the yearling was born and raised in indianapolis (an hour north of me)

Read posts before you start being rude adn calling my decisions ''rediculous'' all of my horses are extreamly happy and healthy.
also, my blanket clipped horses will be blanketed. and l am not talking about a full body clip l am talking about a blanket clip. if im asking about a ''blenket clip'' l am obviously going to BLANKET my BLANKET clipped horses.
of course l wouldnt fully clip horses and turn them out w/o a blanket on. l honestly think you guys are crazy to even think somone would do that.

l wanna know how to blanket clip so l can blanket clip my 3 heavily worked performance horses who sweat and have a heck of a time cooling down right now. those horses go out for 6-8 hours a day right now in medium weight blankets. they will be in heavy blankets with a neck when then get clipped.
i also have a ''retired'' QH and an oldenburg yearling who l WILL NOT be clipped. they go out right now all day in sheets because they have thicker coats than the performance horses since l started blanketing the performance horses early.
each of my horse has a rambo sheet, a rambo ''high neck'' medium weight and a rambo heavy weight with a neck as well. they also all have a full set of stable blankets. each of my horses has 6 blankets. they are well cared for, thanks for your ''concerns'' but l am not going to let my horses freeze, l promise.

Id say leave them in. l live in Pa & this weekend its going to be low of 8 or 9 & im NOT turning either of my horses out.. their both going to be in a stall with extra bedding. my horses have enver seen anything below 20 is so its going to be bad. Im throwing on extra blankets becuase one is a filly only 6 months old. & the other is a TB with very light skin & not fuzzy at all. so yea were bundling up.. but if ur guys r use to it i'd say keep them in & expecially at night

Why dont u just do a trace clip, If they r used to FL weather clipping them after u have moved isnt the best idea, u certainly dont want to stress them out. If ur horses dont have decent coats they need to be double blanketed to go on turnout over the next week as it is going to be unruley out...-20 to -50 with wind chill. l think its just too cold right now to even worry bout clipping..wait another month & then u could do a blanket clip leaving hair on their legs & clipping everywhere else a blanket will cover.

sorry but it is rediclulas not to rug one horse because it bit anouther horse. The horse wont know why it is freezing they do not think like we do.

Why on earth do you want to clip a yearling anyway? a yeatling should not be doing the level of work to warrent a clip in anyway.
Clip your older horse and rug him up.

its a better clip for horses that r being worked in cold weather, we used to use it on hunters when l was a kid because they still had enough hair to be turned out most of the time, but the areas that were likely to sweat alot were cliped to provide cooling

Edit: there was no way of telling from ur post that u had not just moved. Which would be a huge stress on warm weather horses. the site l posted above will show u a blanket clip as well as many other variations of clips u can concider, the trace outline of each & what activity level they work for.

Why do not u blanket them? That seems to me to be the most logical answer. l would NEVER let my horses out in winter without a blanket on.

My mare is Holsteiner/Thoroughbred & got fuzzier than hell by October, so l hunter clipper her (clipped cheek bone & down, neck, left a saddle patch on the back, belly & hind quarters, leaving the legs as they were.) She wears a medium weight stable blanket with a heavy weight turnout blanket with neck rug, & is turned out all night & inside all day. If u clip ur horses, u MUST blanket them adequately. It is like stripping u naked & asking u to stand out in -10 below.

My horses r all hunter clipped, wear two blankets WITH neck rugs, & the lowest we've got so far is 10 degrees. Now we're back at 38-45 degrees with rain.

If u look into getting some blankets, my favorite is the Weatherbeeta stuff. Taka & Orican. Rider is International also makes very comparable blankets for a lower price.

l think it depends more on the wind than the temperature. If it will be 8 degrees, sunny & still, I'd turn them all out. If it is 8 degrees & the wind is howling, l might leave them in. My horses have access to the barn even when they're in so l leave it up to them to decide. l close them in at night in the winter but they're out during the day. l am in MD & it usually does not go lower than the 10 is or 20's, but it does occasionally happen.

In a blanket clip, the hair that is not shaved off should look like ur horse is wearing a blanket. Click the images link in Google & find lots of pictures to go by. l suppose u could use one of ur horse is blankets as a guide. I've never done a blanket clip myself, but did a trace clip on my son is long haired pony (who l have to clip completely in the summer).
