Do you think this would be a good barrel horse(sorry no pic):

14.3 hh
Quarter Horse/Morgan cross
4 year old

Mostly asking if you think a QH/Morgan cross could be good? l do not know much about Morgans so l would not know.

By the way this is my horse l am talking about.
Should have told you guys this to.
She LOVES running!

Oh and l have talked to a couple of people and she has excellent conformation and a awsome disposition.

She has short back( perfect l think for barrels).
She is mostly QH but has abut 20-30% Morgan

Quarter horses are the ones that are mostly picked for the sport. When l did Barrel racing (Now english rider) l had a QH and most of the horses l competed with were QH.

So yer, they're picked for the sport quite a lot.

Best of luck x

yeah any horse can barrel race it just depends on how fast the horse is and if it wants to run.

u have a 8 yo quarter horse cross mare that is about 14.3 hands and l trained her to run barrels on my own (im 15)

Quarter horses generally make good barrel racers, l am not sure about the Morgan side either. However you need to make sure the horse wants to do it, if not the horse will do it for you but your times will be slower then they could be. A horse who enjoys what they are doing will do better at it.

l love that cross, morgans r amazing all round horses l believe the r the ultimate horse (i worked on a morgan sport horse stud for 6 months during breeding season) both morgans & quarter horses r fast agile & goodd well natured quiet horses, l think it would be a good cross for barrel racing but it depends on the horse.

Also, if it were my horse l would not start barrel racing till it was about 6 or 7 when its limbs arnt as fragile & its mind is more developed, then every time u go into a comp arena it doesnt think its all go go go, it may be fun now but it stuffs with a young horses head.

Hmm l dont know much about morgans either.but the QH is good :) Umm his height is nice for a barrel horse--shorter horses can whip around better--as long as he isnt long-backed he should be a good barrel horse.you want a powerful rump & hocks to push off & a strong thick chest to pull forward with.

l also agree with Bale, u dont want to start this horse yet, wait a few years--maybe train for WP or do showmanship & get some show experience under him before u start barrels.also u need to let the horse mature, too many people start barrel horses wayy to early & the result is a horse that gets ''fried on speed'' & is a danger to you, itself, & other horse/rider combinations, not to mention the ring steward (small shows) or the ring crew..also a horse that gets started to young will have a shorter career as its joints will not have had time to fully mature & so all those years of hard running--a 4 yr old may make it to about 11 or 12 yrs old before having to be retired from barrels as its joints will be too screwed up..

Good Luck!

Quarter Horses are the main or big barrel racers. Morgans are mostly used for English riding. They are very pretty and are very good movers. It depends on how much of a quarter horse you horse is. If he or she has a big build l would say your horse is good for barrel racing.

l think the most important question is if this horse is completely sound, l dont ride western anymore (havent since l was about 10) l now ride english, but l know barrel racing takes ALOT from a horse, its also very hard on the stifles. As far as the breed and height sounds like you have it going for you! Just make sure its 100% sound. And try it out, can not hurt to try! You will soon find if its the sport for your horse or not.

not really l would recommend a qh/sorrel or a qh/palomino

l HATE YOU!! lol. Quarter horses an morgans r my favorite breeds!! l bet she is a lovely cross!! l am so jealous!! lol.

Now, down to business. If she has a short back, then that is great!! Also, good barrel racers have nice straight legs. run u hand from her butt, right beside her tail, down to her hock, down to the ground. If u do not have to move ur hand outward or inward at all, then she has nice straight legs, which is a plus for barrel racers. l am sure she will excel in barrels because of the quarter horse in her. (Morgans r fast horses too, btw, but no match to a quarter horse is speed.)

Start out slow on her. Walk the pattern for one to two weeks, trot the pattern for about three weeks, & then lope it. When she has these down good, & she is pocketing around the barrel just right, kick it up a notch. See if she will run it, still pocketing around the barrel correctly. If not, then go back to basics, walk-trot-lope.

good luck!! have fun & i'm still jealous!!!!!!

That depends entirely on how fast this horse is & what circuit u want to show her on/how serious of a show? For A Circuit barrels l would say its highly unlikely ur QH x Morgan would be fast enough (although l once knew someone with a 50/50 QH x Arab that was) but for local or maybe regional shows, u can try it, alot depends on how the horse is put together & how well she corners & handles.

BUT. l would not be running a 4 year old. Not if u want her to last. l would work on her skills at trot & canter, & just put miles & experience on her at canter or slower, until she is 6 years old, before doig barrels. Otherwise u compromise her legs & she is unlikely to last. 4 is way too young to be running anything let alone barrels.

If u want a serious barrel horse prospect, ask a trainer to help u choose a well-bred Appendix Quarter Horse, Appendix Paint or Appendix Appaloosa for it.

she would probably be good for small 4h shows, gymkhanas and stuff like that. im sorry to say but she is short and you would not be able to go much higher that little shows in competition. if she has a short back though, decent conformation and the heart to run perhaps she will do well.
good luck!
