OK, so at summer camp, there was a sick horse named Goose. He looked like he was in really bad condition! l could see his hip bones, and ribs, and...l felt so bad for him!So, l asked one of the wranglers what was wrong with him. She said ''Oh, he just ate some sand.''l said ''So he is got sand colic?'' ''No, he just has a tummy ache.'' Is that really as strange as it sounded? That is called sand colic...right?? Yeah...no WAY I am going back! l knew more about horses than all of the wranglers put together! We were not even aloud to trot on the trail!

Uh ya. Those people do not really sound like they know anything about horses. It may not be sand colic yet but eating sand is not good and will most likely develop into sand colic.

NO, it is true horses can have sand colic. My horse almost died from it. and i'm dead serious. where we live we have some sand mixed with the dirt. and l guess she ate it and she got colic. (sand colic) and it was pretty serious.

l know a pony that died of sand colic because of ignorant vets!! the owner was on top of it but they never used that vet again. Also, if you live in a sandy area, use sand clear!! Sand clear saves lives!!

yeah that is sand colic. it is very serious, when my horse had it he had to go under surgery to remove the sand. it sounds like that horse is neglected and it had an unfit owner.

Yes, poor Goose was probably suffering from sand colic, which can be & is a MAJOR KILLER of horses if it is not treated promptly & kept under control. This woman was either ignorant or she was trying to make u feel bad, l am not sure which- but at any rate, if u see another animal in that kind of condition again, u need to tell ur folks about it & have them call the SPCA & report it. As for going back to that camp, l wouldn't- because u obviously know more than ur instructors do, & u wo not get any benefit out of it.
Sand colic is a problem in horses which live in coastal or sandy areas & which r allowed to graze in a sandy pasture or consume hay off of sandy ground, the way our horses do. Our horses r all on a regular regimen of Sand Clear, which is really nothing more than Metamucil for horses ( it is a special type of grain called psyllium, which expands in the gut & binds with the sand, allowing the horse to pass it in his or her manure without harm) & we have only had one case of sand colic in recent years. Unfortunately, however, that case involved one of my sister is polo horses, & he had to have surgery to clean his gut out, or he would have DIED. The surgery was successful, & he recovered, but it was an expensive lesson for all of us. Why r u laughing about sand colic? There is nothing funny about it- & certainly nothing funny about watching a horse suffer in pain because his belly is full of sand & hurts him. This woman u met at the camp was acting stupid, that is all- l somehow have trouble believing she is that ignorant. As for ur not being allowed ( this is the correct spelling of that word, by the way) to trot on the trail, it sounds to me like the management of that camp is trying to prevent accidents- but they r going about it the wrong way. You can not keep kids safe by denying them the right to try things & live their lives, & forcing everyone to walk all the time is a way of doing this. l do not blame u for not wanting to return- l would not go back either.
Just my take on things..

Those people are stupid and should never be allowed to be around or own horses again and if they are they should be sent to jail for neglect and being stupid. Call Animal Control
