Do not mind the thin paint horse in the album that is a whole different story. (He has ulcers and is a hard keeper and last owner did not feed him enough)
Also does equine senior feed make them hot l have been giving it to her and she seems to sweat?
Wow did not know senior made them hot! It is worse cause she is stalled and has a winter blanket due to some patches of fur missing.
Before we got her she had ringworm and needed her teeth floated and was given two flakes a day of grass hay,

Now she got her teeth floated and was dewormed and is fed three flakes of alfalfa grass hay in the morning 2 quarts of equine senior feed in the afternoon and 3 more flakes of hay at night and later l give her about 2 more quarts of senior feed. She also is being treated for ring worm you can tell in the photos her fur is growing back. The fur looks messy because she just had a blanket on but not the before pictures.

she looks great! getting a lot better! congrats!

yes, senior feed makes them very hot. l would advise giving Beet Pulp. it would work amazingly in your mare is case. it helps them gain weight safely and pretty fast, w/o all the excess protien which makes them hot.

She looks like she is gaining pretty well considering it has only been three weeks. You sound like u r feeding her just as u should. l did not know Senior made them hot either (two nof my horses eat it & only one really sweats alot, so maybe it is just in some horses?) Anyways, l would still keep feeding her the Senior, it is a very good food. l know l say this for every weight question, but try adding a cap full or two of corn oil to her feed. It will fatten her up QUICK.you only need to feed it to her till she gets some more weight on her, it is cheap & u dont have to worry about soaking it like beet pulp. l have heard beet pulp is good, but have personally never used it & find it kind of risky, because if u dont soak it it can hurt ur horse. Anyways, ur doing a good job, just try the corn oil :D

She is definitely looking better, & happier. You're on the right track, keep it up. Kudos to u for rescuing a skinny horse. l just did he same for a 13yo thoroughbred, about 200 lbs underweight. I've had him for a month & can already tell a major difference. Keep feeding her the senior feed, & l would steer clear of beet pulp. l worked at an english riding facility, & boarders fed their horses beet pulp. I've never seen so many horses colic before. And the scary thing was, they did not stop feeding it!! You really have to soak beet pulp in water for a while, because u can really damage ur horse by feeding it unsoaked pulp. l am feeding my skinny TB 2 scoops of senior, a scoop of rice bran, & a half a scoop of shredded alfalfa twice a day. Be careful feeding ur mare so much alfalfa hay, it is really rich in protein & hard to digest. I'd cut back to 1 flake of alfalfa, along with two flakes of bermuda hay twice a day. Other than that, you're on the right road. Good luck. Keep us posted & let us know how she is doing!!

Senior feed does not make them hot like temperature wise it makes them hot like attitude wise. Just clarifying in case you misunderstood.

She looks alot happier

She is looking much better! Whatever you're doing is working, senior feed does make them hot, l would look into something maybe not sweet. Also, a rice bran adds some extra calories and it helps put on weight nicely. It also makes a nice hot mash in cold weather.

l know someone who has a horse who is similar to ur now! but prior the horse was very ribby & topline was gone & hips sticking out .

What they did was purchase a bucket of weight gainer it cost about 29 dollars ( l had my doubts about this weight gainer ) but l will tell u it has made a huge differance with in a month. The horse looks like it put on a couple hundred pounds

Their horse u could see the ribs & hips big time !!!!! it was really bad. But like l said in a month now u can not see anything at all as far as ribs. the topline still needs help & so do the hips but l think should only take a few more months for the horse to look 100 %

you r on the right track.

Yes! She looks a lot better, and cleaner.. and happier!
She does look a little bit thin in before and after pictures.
But other than that, she is gorgeous!

Equine senior does not make a horse hot. Nor does feeding grain make a horse hot.

Not taking blankets off during the day when the weather is warm, does make a horse hot.

Well, assuming shes a rescue, congratulations! Shes absolutely beautiful!

In addition to the feed, which is an important phase in combatting malnourishment issues, it would also help if u came up with some kind of conditioning program so she can wear off & utilize some of her ''heat'' or ''hot'' that u always seem to mention & be concerned about. She has no muscle tone & soon u will be wondering how to get rid of her ''hay'' belly. And that comes with being worked.

Why not ride her rather than the pinto that needs medical attention instead of riding & training at this point? Being that she is older & u being a beginner as u have mentioned before, this might be the better mount for u at this time. Just a thought.

How is the cremello doing? Have u determined if she is pregnant or just has a hay belly ?

When someone says grain makes a horse ''hot, they do not mean hot as in temperaTURE, they mean hot as in extra energy or temperaMENT. Grain is not making her sweat, the blanket is making her sweat. If she is sweating TAKE THE BLANKET OFF.
