Its a lovely 16.2hh 8 years old dark bay gelding, Its lovely.l want the horse just for a horse which l ride around my field every couple of days and go out for a few hacks .... But there one problem it says 'Occasionally windsucks' Could anyone tell me what this is and would it be a problem. It is only 875 pound to buy because it Occasionally windsucks. But what is it Oh l have heard of that... If l do buy him and he will have a horse company and he will never really be bored as much, he would be alright and ridable ... DO cribbing collars hurt the horse >>>. Abi r.... WE been to the vet for advise..... and they said she is not allowed to do any more then hacking aand daily rides... Due to heavy Breathing ....

That is where they bite down on a hard surface, usually the fence or their stall, & they suck in air. It is an addictive behavior, usually gets worse, but if u keep ur horse entertained, u may see it decrease some. A lot of people call it cribbing - they're very similar processes. Sometimes it makes the horse harder to keep weight on, & it is not really healthy, but it is manageable. We have a cribber who has been cribbing for the last 16 years. It is mostly just annoying, but u learn to live with it.
ADD: Cribbing collars do not hurt the horse. The worst they do is rub them, so make sure if u use one, u put fleece on it to make it more comfortable. However, l have never seen a cribbing collar improve the condition. They either do nothing or make it worse. For example, the horse l mentioned above came to us with a collar. When we put it on him, he cribbed ALL the time. When it was off, he only cribbed when he ate. It may work for ur horse, but it may not, so do not expect it to be a miracle.

Amy S has got it correct. It is also known a cribbing. It is a boredom thing but it might be that he has been doing it so long that it is now a habit. The horse in the stable next to my boy did it and the girl tried everything she could to stop it but all failed. l would not buy the horse

Its Just like Cribbing its just another word for it. It can be controlled most of the time with a collar we have 2 horses that do it and they are competitive show jumpers and hunters. So its relay no biggy (well to me anyway) But you should not have a problem.
No Way cribbing collars do not hurt in any way, sometimes they do rub but if you use one of those fleece satbelt covers then it will stop that right away!

Windsucking is like cribbing. It is a destructive habit that can damage the horses throat & lungs, damages wood surfaces in the barn & causes horses to lose weight. It can sometimes be controlled by increased turnout time, a cribbing collar, painting nasty tasting substance on favorite cribbing spots. l have a cribber that does well in a Miracle collar made by Weaver leather. If the horse is great in every other way, & has no breathing issues now then it may be a good buy.

It is the same as cribbing. The horse sounds like a good match for u & u should not let the habit stop u from purchasing it. Though, when u go to look at the horse, look for signs of cribbing in his stall- chewed wood, broken latches, etc. This will give u an idea of how extensive the habit is & how much damage he is capable of inflicting. To curb the problem, try to remove all surfaces he could crib on from his stall. Remove mangers & replace them with flexible rubber feed pans on the floor. Make sure his stall walls r smooth with nothing to grip with his mouth. Replace his stall door with a rubber stall guard or rubber covered chains. If he is turned out, run hot tape along the top board of the fence so that he can not reach the fence to crib on it.
Good luck.

Get a cribbing collar, & a salt or a mineral block, that can keep ur horse occupied for a hot minute. Another thing u can get him is a ball, hang it in his stall & he can entertain himself. You can buy him a ball out of any equestrian magazine. Salt blocks u can buy at a feed stores as well. Because its boredom, then honestly get him out more & entertain him, go on walks just lead him around. Its good for a horse to get out & not be ridden. Make him feel more like a companion & not just an object to be ridden.

There may be a regional difference in terminology here. The way l know it, cribbing is the biting of hard surfaces & sucking. It releases endorphins, & make the horse feel good, so they get addicted. It can be very destructive to barns & fences. Although the classic cribber is a skinny thing because they'd rather crib than eat, there r many who r not. Depending on how they flex their necks to bite on surfaces, they can get thick neck muscles.
Windsucking is like cribbing but without gripping the hard surfaces. The horse just reaches out with their neck & gulps air. It also is a habit & can lead to slightly unusual neck muscling, but is not destructive.
l have an old show horse who windsucks. He has traveled long distances in his life & been stuck in quarantine & who knows what else. Its just like a horse that sucks in air before the girth goes on, but he does it all the time in his stall & pen. But not when under saddle, usually. He still did grand priz jumpers & high level dressage.
Best thing would be to ask the seller what they mean by windsucking, & seeing the horse to see if it affects him. Cribbing is definitely a nuisance, & does bring the price of horses down because of it. But u will never know unless u ask them what they mean, & put that in context of what u can manage with collars & non-wood fencing.

l think its great that u want another horse, but to waste what seems a good horse with a lot of potential on hacking is a great shame. why not get one that is a little older, or semi-retired. just a thought.
wind sucking occasionally should not be too much of a problem, but it can easily get worse. some websites say that u should not use a collar, some say u should, its really up to you. l have got some websites for u to help u decide which option is best.
good luck & here is some info on wind sucking

Amy S and others have got it right, if its stabled it will teach the others to windsuck and most livery stables will not permitt windsuckers, weavers etc on yard, health problems get worse as horse gets older, windsucking weaving and raking, the 3 problems that drive me mad, friend had windsucking problem horse, tried all the cures suggested, only one which worked..she sold the horse..sorry, but wouldnt buy problems

cribbing collars do not hurt and you will be able to ride whether he windsucks or not. usually after wearing the windsucking collar for a couple of weeks they should break the habit but if he starts again just put the collar back on. Also the more things he has to keep him amused the less he will want to windcuck because he has other things to think about.
