...about western riding.

Why are you not supposed to post the trot in a western saddle? Its it just riding etiquette or is it bad for the saddle in some way?

l plan on doing some western riding and it is going to be hard to fight the urge to post the trot, and l might instinctively at the beginning so l just wanna make sure l wont like... rip the saddle in half =P
Woah, sorry. This is a double post! >.< Ignore the other one...

l am fairly certain its just stylistic. If you still ride english, practice your sitting trot (which is also a good thing to learn for english riding). l highly doubt that you could hurt the saddle.

Do not worry about the saddle; it is definitely tough enough to withstand posting. l think that sitting in the saddle during the trot is simply a matter of riding etiquette :-) l know! It is so hard not to post, but if you do accidentally, l am positive you wo not harm the saddle. Just practice sitting deep and rolling back onto your, uh.tailbone. It also really helps to make sure that your heels are down so they absorb the bounce. Good luck!

Its just not proper for the style.you r supposed to be able to sit on the horse all day & not feel a thing.posting shouldnt be nessecary as the horse should move so smoothly it wont jarr u the least.however, if u r in a faster working trot, u can post if u r just having fun or r out on the trail.in shows or training, u should be focusing on the slower smoother gaits & not posting.

Its not bad for the saddle in any way--you will not rip a good quality western saddle in half--my trainer had a horse flip over backwards on her hand-crafted Bailey reining saddle (one of the last that Bailey made by hand before it was commercialized) & it was perfectly fine--barely scratched even.

Most Western horses jog rather than a faster trot. The speed for a jog is more like doing a slow sitting trot. When riding english & moving out in a trot it is uncomfortable to sit to therefore u post.

For just riding in a western saddle & going faster than a jog then it wo not hurt the saddle to post..but also, the stirrups r adjusted longer in a western saddle so u wo not get the same height. l think when going faster than the jog..some riders stand in the stirrups to avoid the jarring.

If u r riding western to learn how to ride then l think u should do it properly & jog which would be slow & very comfortable to sit too.

Remember the lope is also slower than a canter.

Hon, l post in western saddles basically all the time. Its just if you ride in a show, you will be sitting the trot. If you wanna do true western riding; then sit the trot.. Its kind of difficult at times, but its quite a bit of fun! Do not worry, you WONT ruin the saddle!

Good Luck! You will have fun riding western style!

l agree with Park Pleasure. l have trouble fighting the urge to post when l am riding western too,and I've never ridden English before! It is quite odd,but l am getting used to sitting the trot:) Trust me though, you wo not rip the saddle in half. LOL

Ha, the reason you dont post in a western saddle not because it is ''etiquette but because it hurts!! Hahah. l mean, if you want to, go for it. The horn hurts your belly when you go up and forward (trust me, i've tried). My riding instructor asked me to post once, and it doesnt feel natural. l was originally english, and sitting the western jog was really hard for me, because you have to keep thinking, dont post, dont post (especially with a bumpy arab) Hope l helped.

Ask your trainer or a saddlery. l do not know for sure do not do anything if your not sure.

Western riders post all the time - providing there not showing at the time. There is nothing wrong with it. If your riding at an extended trot
(fast trot) in a western saddle it is easier on the horses back to post. If the horse is doing a jog trot or a very slow trot it is easier to sit the trot.
You can not hurt a western saddle by posting in it.

it is just not proper l guess. like english is all proper and ''perfect'' like a teaparty (my best way of describing it. you guys are all clean and stuff!) while western is generally rough and tough- we do not need no posting to make trotting more comfortable! in shows you can not post, but at home and riding anywhere else besides a show (other than rodeos) you can post to your heart is content! pretty much everyone l know posts when riding western.
