l love horses and have riding lessons etc. l work at my local stables, so l have some experience. l looked into jobs to do with horses (i'm in year 9 - about to choose my GCSE is o_0), and l found out it would help a lot if you did the BHS qualifications to at least stage 3. l was wondering what jobs l could potentially get with the BHS stage 3 qualification or what other courses would be good, and why? Also is it worth doing the BHS courses? why? and what Jobs could l get that are not the obvious like instructor, groom, Farrier etc...

Thanks :)

l live in England by the way
i'm thinking way ahead here and concidering all my options :)

l do not know how it is there but here in the US horses are a better way to spend money than earn money with.

There are veterinarian but that path is hard and not for the vast majority of people ( l know someone that flunked out of vet school and said he got straight A is in med school with less studying)

l had a look at this a few years back- l ended up going to uni to do Aniaml Science & l am thinking of going into the feed industry when l finish. If u want to leave school at 16 or 18, obviously that is not for u though :)

l think it is worth doing the BHS courses- even if u need other qualifications to do what u want, they're a good basis & it will show that you're willing & enthusiastic about horses.

Have u thought about working in the racing industry? If u live reasonably close to a racecourse or a racing stables, it'd be worth trying to get involved. If u work in racing for a while u can end up earning quite a bit of money. Other than grooms, farriers & instructors, u could be a jockey, a trainer, u could go off & train as a vet nurse & specialise in horses. loads of things. Some people do not actually ride or anything like that, but they do horsey-related stuff- for example, l met someone for my dissertation who was a feed rep (telling peole which foods would be best for their horses that her company sold) & now sells the rubber 'pretend tarnac' stuff to racecourses so the horses do not slip on concrete.

There is lots of different things u could do. Have a look on the internet at racecourse websites etc & see what takes ur fancy.

Good luck :)

You could be a vet, a show judge, work at a horse store, be a therapist for kids that want to ride(disabled), and about all the rest, sorry but l have not looked into that yet. :(

it seems every Farrier I've ever had eventually gets kicked in the face and then goes on disability. l would probably suggest against that line of work unless you enjoy being kicked in the face by a large animal. But good luck, we can always use more knowledgeable horse people.

l am BHS certified up to Level 2 & l am not going to lie, it was a big waste of my time & money. l live in the US, & l got tested here, but considering the cost of the exams, travel expenses, hotel & rental car.it was so pricey, & l felt kind of ripped off. The exams r like pony club, or something like that, where u have to have to right answer for everything instead of demonstrating ur ability. The judges say that they want to help u succeed, but they were not very friendly or kind at all. l had a lot of complaints, & maybe that is just me, but l say look into it very carefully before u decide to go for it,

Jobs: Be a trainer & break two & three year olds, be a vet or vet is assistant, disabled riding clinic, equine chiropractor, saddle fitter, horse psychic, instructor, riding camp manager, write for a horse magazine, work at a tack store, manage horse shows, manage a stable, teach equine studies at a college..that is all l can think of for now.

Come & muck out my stalls & repair fence. l can not afford to pay you, & u will have to buy the fence materials, but that is how it is, working with horses. To make a small fortune in horses, it is best to start with a large one.

You will also have to pay ur way here to the US, or swim exceptionally well.

Seriously, there is one fellow who has done quite well in horses, even though he was injured & had to retire from steeplechase. That is Dick Francis. There is always a market for books about horses. Anne McCaffrey, a science fiction writer who lives in Ireland, told me she was astonished to find that her book ''To Ride Pegasus'' sold well in Ireland, while her other books did not. ''The Irish will buy any book with a horse on the cover,'' she said.
