What happens to Rodeo Broncos after they retire

l just read another question where people said broncos were trained to buck and very well treated. l only moved to the states a few months back, so rodeo is very new to me. l am curious - what happens to the broncos after they retire? One answerer likened it to racehorses, but they are very hard to retrain and are always liable to wanna 'take off'. A great number end up at the slaughterhouse too. Can broncos be retrained as riding horses or are they put down? l have never seen a bronco advertised as a riding horse and l can not imagine that they are all looked after into their old age?

l would appreciate info from anyone that knows!

Thanks!

l think they get sent to slaughter houses mostly. l mean, a racehorse has been trained to run. Atleast you can ride it. But a rodeo bronco has been trained to buck and get you off...they arnt exactly in the same level. So l think almost all of them are slaughtered..although l have no proof of this, its what l assume- maybe the really good mares and stallions are bred, but l do not know.

ur stock contractors have ALOT of money invested into these horses so when they r retired mares r used for breeding to further the born to buck progam.. depending on the mare & what her rep was as a bucking horse these foals can sell at a VERY high price..
geldings r useally retired as pasture decoration or they can be broke to ride stallions well there sperm is worth ALOT.. any well know stock contracter who works with the PRCA wouldnt send the horse to slaughter l dont know about any rinky dink ones . yes u can retrain broncs for saddle horses

If a mare, they go to breeding for more bucking horses. Seems odd, but they now breed for buck.

If a gelding, they go to rodeo schools for aspiring urban cowboys to have a weekend ''experience'' on. If they do not buck too hard, it works.

The ones that do not work out for those things probably get shipped to Mexico for slaughter, or put down and taken for dog food. The US does not have horse slaughter houses anymore.

Hahahaha ! Bronco horses r not treated well AT ALL, l would know l barrel race, pole bend etc. l love rodeos, but the things they do to horse to make them buck r unbelievably mean & cruel . Go look it up, type in ''american rodeos'' or ''rodeo cruelty'' in a google search, u will see what those horses go through . l highly doubt u will ever be able to retrain a bronco, they've probably gone through so much, they'd just wanna get everybody off there effing back . They most likely go to slaughter houses . And for the thoroughbreds, they can be retrained, do not let anybody tell u they can not because I've ridden an ex race horse before, & she was 23 when l rode her, & she was giving 4 yr olds lessons . l also rode one that was hyper & he just came off the track, u can def. retrain them .

a really good one might be studded out, the rest are slaughtered for the dinner table in France. l guess you could adopt one if you do not mind feeding it. The other lady may be right. Bucking horses probebly arent treated as well as bucking bulls. Bucking bulls are babied, but their expensive. You can go to a horse auction and buy horses that buck all day long for $50. Unless a horse is bomb proof, or you can rope of of them, their worthless now days.

When they retire, if they are really, really good at what they do and can reproduce, that is what they do, either for the person that owns them at the time or they are sold for that purpose, as the inclination to buck is sometimes simply bred and born in a colt. If they are not that good as a bucking horse, then they can be trained to be a using horse.some of them just end up at the killer plants, but not as many as you would think.

they are not trained to buck all they are doing is itching an itch. they put this thing around there privates and it makes them buck to itch it. they are very well taken care of some better then riding horses.. when they retire they break them

First may l say this to all those people who think they know whats going on in rodeo. l will not mention names but if u pole bend or have seen a PETA video & say u know what happens to these animal.. You may want to do more research before saying anything. Because u r WRONG.

These horses r quite well taken care of them. When thes broncs retire the mares go to breeding stock & the gelding get retrained. l & many people l have known have bought some of these retired gelding & they have become some of the most sound horses u could wish for. Now as for the studs, they do not use studs for bucking stock, the reason for that is they r too dangerous to themselves, the handlers & the cowboys. Studs will fight just to fight(before any one says''not my stud that is an exception not the rule). Rodeo has not used stud/stallions sense the 1930 is because they where to dangerous.

As for making the horses/bulls buck they DO NOT tie anything around the testicles, First on the horses due to the above mentioned reason they use mares & gelding, nothing to tie to down there. As for the bulls, l would honestly like to see some one try. These bucking animals r very well cared for. The aid they use to help the animal to buck is called a flank strap & it does not go anywhere that may harm the aminal, it goes right above the hips of the animal just like a belt.

Now with that analogy imagin this. We all know some people r ticklish right above the hips & some people r not. And, if u go up to some one & tickle them right above the hips, some will jump & giggle & some wont. Well.guess what, the same rule applys to these bucking animal. Some r ticklish & some r not. Not every bull or bronc makes good bucking stock, & if the flank strap is too tight, it hurts the animal & it can not buck, & if the flank strap is too loose the animal wont buck. Each animal takes different pressure as well, that is why the stock contractor pulles the flanks strap to get the right pressure to ensure the animal performs the best.

And think about this if any the males read this(if ur female imagine then). If l where to tie something ur testicals, would u feel like jumping around?

But to answer ur question in short now. The bucking broncs when they retire either live out their lives in the pasture or get sold to someone who normally gives the horse a good home.

Plus think on this, these bucking animals r worth thousands & sometimes millions of dollars. Now why would the owner want to harm them.

Kevin hit the nail on the head, most of the retired bucking stock is bred in the ''born to buck program'' or r retrained for pleasure horses & some r also retrained to go back to rodeo as pickup horses, retired & active rodeo cowboy rough-stock riders will stand in line to get these retired horses & contractors always find homes for them.rodeo cowboys do not give up on horses or bulls & they have our utmost gratitude & respect so they r treated like royalty & allowed the rest of their lives as horses or bulls, many become the pets of ranchers & contractors.they did their jobs in the arena so in return we take it upon ourselves to take care of them in retirement.

The top bucking stallions r bred to the best bucking mares. Most any mare or gelding that does not make it to the top goes for slaughter. Why would any one pay $500 for a horse bred to buck when they can pick up a nice trained horse for the same price. Grated Coconut is a world champion bucking stallion many times. He will never end up in a slaughter house. When not in the arena he is a gentle easy to handle stallion. The big breeding ranches have several hundred head of horses. No way can or would they give them all a good home.

My friend has an ex buck jumper.
She is a fantastic horse, she broke her bridle out on a trail and was ridden home with just reins around her neck.
You can not get on her bareback, without a saddle blanket and if you touch her bum while you're on her, she goes off.
l do not know how hard it would be to re-train them though. l expect it would be pretty hard though.
She is a great kids horse too.
