l am relatively new to jumping..probably only jumping 2,3 or 2,6 on lesson horses. My question is, how do you deal with all the different ways horses jump? The lesson horses jump in a very flat way...l feel like l do not have to do much to stay on because it is more of an extended and lifted canter stride than a jump. But then l go to jump my own horse and usually end up getting left behind because he has a powerful round jump.l like the feeling of jumping the scopey horses better - when l do it right at least! How do l prepare myself for that rounder jump?My horse is the only one available for me to ride who does it, but with him being young and green, l am iffy about practicing on him because more often than not, l catch him in the mouth. He has been great so far, but l do not wanna start any bad habits of him refusing or anything...So how do l practice when it is so entirely different than the jumping l am learning in lessons?

Can you get some jumping lessons on your own horse? That would be best. If your horse is at home and the lessons are at a stable, maybe you can hire the trainer to do a session or two at your house. Or you could trailor your horse to the stable for a day or two.

Fasten a neck strap around your horse is neck which will keep your hands in the correct place, which will help you keep from getting left behind and catching him in the mouth. You can use a stirrup leather to make a neck strap. Also, jump your horse over tiny jumps. He might still jump them big, but not as big as he might jump a 2'6'' jump. It would probably be best for you to take some of your lessons on school horses and some on your own horse.

stay in your two point around the course (i'm assuming he will jump every jump without stopping) and leg him out of the turn to get the right distance to the fence. keep a loop in the reins and shove your heels down. a couple of strides before the fence, grab your horses mane and just sit there and wait for the fence to come to you. GRABBING THE MANE really helps.

Try and get as many lessons as you can on your own horse rather than school horses.
If you trust him enough not to run out, leave a bit more slack in your reins so you wo not have to worry about catching him in the mouth.

If u r riding ur own horse, u need to grab mane to avoid catching him in the mouth. That is the cardinal sin of jumping & it will ruin him if u continue to do it. If u can not avoid it, then u should not jump him. Let someone else do it until he gets a little more proficient. Remember - u r never 'too good' to grab mane. Even top riders will do it in a tough spot.

For a thrusty jumper, u want to put ur feet more forward near the girth & keep ur shoulders up. That will give u more stability.

Grab the main half way up his neck that should help your hip stay in the correct position and will make sure you dont catch him in the mouth .Alot of horse is for advanced riders wont put up with that and they will stop in front of the next jump or buck ect .Put your heals down and mabey when your over the jump or coming down think leg forward so that you dont swing your leg back from the power of you horse . hope that helps
